Seaway News For Sale Too – Is City Hall Politics Destroying Media in Cornwall? by Jamie Gilcig APRIL 20, 2017

Cornwall Ontario –  I live in a very strange community.  Ignorance and corruption are literally destroying our local economy.   Now two of the main three media are for sale, and the Standard Freeholder is rumored to be wobbly.  Corus Radio chopped its newsroom staff a few years ago as well.

It’s getting harder to get any real news in this community.

When I founded CFN in 2009 it was with positive hope to improve local news coverage in this community which I, and many others, found lacking in the Freeholder and Seaway News.

Sadly, I found out after a few years why that was the case.  The heavy handed, ignorant, and corrupt political atmosphere in this crazy town.   I mean I was once called in by former scandalized CAO Paul Fitzpatrick and “I’m not sure what he does for the city, but pulls in over $150K per year” Mark Boileau for a meeting after the two were incensed that I had used the term “hard on” in reference to Mr. Fitzpatrick’s behaviour towards this locally grown newspaper.   IE  Fitzy had a hard on for CFN.   Which it appeared he kind of did as he spearheaded the boycott by City Hall of this newspaper after his alleged sexual scandal and abuse of city Whistle Blowers.   The boys were insisting that somehow it was of a sexual connotation…even though it’s a very common slang term.

Simply put, other media seem to be afraid to rock the boat and frankly I’m not sure I can blame them.  I’ve seen CFN clients denied permits unless they pulled their ads with us.   This of course is never done “officially”, but points are made.  Just ask how long it took Cliff Crites to allow the Port Theater to get it’s liquor license, or Truffles to get its patio permit?

Now with the announcement that TC Media is looking to dump The Seaway News it truly will be up to the community to support a media outlet if they actually want news.    And with businesses fearful of the wrath of the likes of Bob Peters, Mark Boileau, and some of the other mavens downtown it should be interesting to see how that evolves?

This newspaper has been for sale for two years.  One sale nearly went through, but the city hall led boycott killed it.

Instead we’re growing our numbers inside and outside of Cornwall and becoming a regional paper.    There’s a certain irony in that most times we’ve had to heavily discount ads to support local business.  A recent sales rep said that many businesses told her that they couldn’t afford our $249 yearly banner sale.   So we whipped up a $99 Spring sale only to see people ask who else was buying one as though they were highschool kids.

And the biggest irony, and probably the big reason TC is selling the SN is that they’ve lost their ads to what most likely is the least read newspaper in the community simply because it has the support of one of our worst city councilors, David  Murphy.  The paper is only dumped off at a few retail locations in the city, but does offer the same sort of ads as the Seaway News for cut rates.  It’s as though the local businesses know they have to advertise, but are so worried about upsetting the hypersensitive City Hall crew that they park their ad dollars there instead of where the eyeballs are, which is exactly where you’re supposed to advertise.

Even our own bank, with a board of cliquesters like Don Fairweather and Michael Galvin, boycott CFN and recently did a major Google ad buy. There’s a certain irony that this bank, a business based supposedly on numbers, is literally paying ten times per impression that appear on CFN than advertise with their own long term client.  Now that’s Cornwall!  (Thanks for the ad bucks guys 🙂  )

Frankly the board of Your Credit Union should resign.  You just can’t put your petty prejudices ahead of your role on a board.  It’s just juvenile.   There’s simply no business reason to boycott CFN and it’s funny watching some of the cliquesters fumble their way down the stairs.   And it’s tragic because the people I work with in the bank have always been utterly awesome.   Although I do wonder why they never have had a male teller in all the years I’ve banked there?

This month three events took place in Cornwall with all three boycotting CFN.  They didn’t even send us press releases trying to get a freebie.    Two so far have had lighter than expected crowds.   The third is looking to be a flop.

Does anyone think for example, that the 92,000+ unique visitors, 200,000+ visits, and 1.3M human pageviews in March wouldn’t have helped any of those events, or Your Credit Union sell a few more mortgages?

And we’re one of the few media outlets that actually will publish our real raw numbers.  No voo doo stats.

As was shared recently; the problems that plague this community were here long before I moved to Cornwall in 2004.  There’s no reason to keep repeating them just so Rick Shaver can look cool, is there?

We’ve seen Gilles Latour unmasked.  We’ve seen Bob Kilger slither away to Ottawa.  We’ve seen Brock Frost just plain slither.

Frankly the problem is the public not demanding and supporting  better media, because honestly media are the only window to the truth that the public has any chance of ever seeing what goes on behind the curtains.

Luckily elections are less than two years away and maybe, just maybe, the people of Cornwall, as they enjoy their new tax increases because of the abuse and mismanagement of this council and management, will smarten up and realize that elections should never be popularity contests.   We don’t choose our doctors or surgeons based on them being a relative or friend of a friend.

There’s one young man, sells cars, a total sweetie, but honestly, not sure I’d trust him to run the city.   He’s banking on his popularity and his facebook crew getting him elected.   That’s scary.  Because it’s way too Brock Frost, and in this town that might happen.  Maybe if he pushed himself as hard to learn the issues, learn politics, and learn how to get real work done there might be some hope, but in the years he’s been talking to me about politics he’s not shown much growth or learning.   Again, awesome guy, expecting a new baby, local guy, and all, but City Council?

Do we need really another generation of Andre Rivette’s?

We trust our elected officials to serve us, but when you look at this Council, MPP McDonell, and MP Lauzon, what do we really see?  Ignorance, closed shop, partisan behavior, bullying, closed schools, less health care, crumbling infrastructure, loss of our art gallery in Cornwall, our youth fleeing in search of a life, and loss of true local business.

So we all get to see if anyone bites on the Seaway News.  We get to see if the Freeholder makes it to the next election, and we get to see if CFN is sold this year or moves to a wider platform.  People don’t realize that we can report on what our viewers seem to want, the exposure of the many silly scandals in this community, from a beach in Spain as long as there’s wifi.

Wouldn’t it all be better if people simply started to hold those responsible accountable and started to work together to make this a better community?   Honestly?  I know I’d love to be a part of a positive improvement of this community.   Do you?

This rant and editorial is purely the opinion of Editor Jamie Gilcig and does not represent the opinion of any other owner of CFN, its viewers or advertisers.

Should CFN Eliminate Viewer Comments in this Newspaper? APRIL 20, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – Viewer comments at their best add immensely to the news consuming experience.  At their worst…well anyone that’s read a facebook debate knows what I typeth of.   Here at CFN we’ve always adhered to our vision and mission statements.

CFN is an online newspaper whose Mission is to give voice to the many who’d never have an opportunity to have a voice whether via op-ed, letters, or comments on stories.

To be non-partisan and allow voices to be heard even though our ownership, editors, staff, sponsors, and viewers may not always agree with them.

For people to have voice, but still do so in a safe manner although they may be challenged strongly for those opinions.

CFN’s vision is to see our community participate in a lively discussion of the issues that matter to them no matter how small or obscure.   We want to nourish and help create strong voices.

In these days of spoon fed values and massive societal conformity for people to think about issues and not just follow the pack.   Whether it be questioning why decisions are made or confronting people and holding them accountable; CFN’s vision is to help empower people while educating and entertaining.

The news can be a living thing.   And one newspaper can be very different than others.

After eight years and over 60,000 comments the bigger question is if there truly is value from and for our viewers?   It’s not just CFN of course.  The Standard Freeholder no longer allows comments, and other media have limited comments.

Many simply use facebook where it’s very rare, especially locally, to have any intelligent debate without trolls and personal abuse.   It’s a scary indictment of society if you think about it in the bigger picture.

Generally the trolls, freaks, and our own Jules, (and yes Bob Peters, Jules is a real live human being – a senior born and bred in Cornwall who now lives in Ottawa) scare away any true form of discussion and most debate.   As someone that personally supports true free speech it’s been disappointing.  It’s also why I gave up the idea of doing talk radio in the area as our local audience frankly make the old Lowell Green show look coherent and progressive.

There are well spoken, intelligent, and thoughtful people in the area, but they tend to shy away from our unwashed masses, and after the last few years I can’t really blame them.

We would still of course host Letters to the Editor and our CFN Polls.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

So the question today is whether CFN should either limit comments or eliminate them from our content?

What do you think dear CFN viewers.  You can post your comments below.   And now would be the time to do so!

Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau on Morgentaler Abortion Clinic Demonstrations APRIL 20, 2017

Statement by Chief Charles Bordeleau | Morgentaler Clinic Demonstrations

The Ottawa Police Service monitors and responds to hundreds of events, demonstrations and protests in the National Capital Region on an annual basis.  Each of these events has its own unique challenges, and it is our role to keep the peace and ensure a safe and secure demonstration or protest for all involved, inclusive of those who may be impacted.

One of the more regular demonstration areas in the city is the Morgentaler Clinic on Bank St. We are very aware of the issues at that location and have been working for years to deal with ongoing demonstrations there. This includes being in dialogue with the clinic management and demonstrators. We are reaching out to the clinic management again.

Our police officers routinely monitor this demonstration, do respond to calls for service, and take action that is appropriate in the circumstances. We continually respond to calls for service at this location, most related to protestors and graphic signs.

All reported incidents are taken seriously and investigated. Where warranted we enforce applicable laws.

In one recent case, in early December of 2016, an individual was given a trespass notice for attending the clinic by security. The next day, the individual attended the address again and was stopped by security who called police. Police arrived on scene and spoke with the man who said he would continue to return. He was then arrested by police to prevent the continuation of the offence and brought to the cell block where he was held for a court appearance. He was later charged with mischief.

Our officers have the difficult job of ensuring the safety and security of all those involved or impacted by a demonstration.

We have also been accused by some of not respecting the rights of protestors at that location.

If the clinic wishes to obtain a zone (bubble) around the premise where demonstrations or protests would be prohibited, they would need to pursue the matter with the courts. This would be a civil matter and would need to be decided on by a court because of the impact on individual rights. That is something we simply do not have the authority to grant as a police service.

The City Special Events By-law was not intended to apply to an individual engaged in expressive activity on a sidewalk as in this particular case.  Rather, the purpose of the By-law is intended to address larger scale events involving a collection of demonstrators where the management of the municipal right-of-way and other municipal and local resources would necessitate engaging the permit process.

We recognize that there are differing perspectives on issues that may be the subject of any particular protest or demonstration. The application of laws as it relates to protests must be carefully considered, ensuring that the enforcement is not in contravention of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Ottawa Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those involved or impacted by a protest.  The preservation of peace is achieved through dialogue and by reaching out to establish lines of communication.  As with other protests and demonstrations, we are willing to continue dialogue to ensure the safety and security of all involved and the preservation of peace.

SD&G Highlanders Armoury in Cornwall Ontario Covers Up Gun Theft by Jamie Gilcig APRIL 23, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – A CFN viewer emailed in upset over an alleged cover up over a missing gun from the armoury.

We get lots of information from the public.  Each case has to be evaluated and of course verified because even a gonzo newspaper has to tell the truth.

The Armoury is home to the SD&G Provincial Liberal Riding Association SD&G Highlanders.

The police confirmed that a gun was reported stolen, but that it’s still under investigation and that they would release no further information.

According to the source the gun was stolen months ago and they are alleging a cover up.

The gun, according to the source, is a C1 sub machine gun, modeled on the British Sten gun,  that was on display.

While it was missing its firing pin, according to the source it could be replaced or fabricated in this internet age.

A call to the unit, where Captain James Borer (former Liberal Riding Association President) is the media rep, was not responded to however we did get a call from the military in Toronto who simply wanted to know when our story deadline was.    Chain of command in the military is a reality of their lives of course.

The bigger questions are why wasn’t this reported via the police blotter?   Why wasn’t the public informed that a sub machine gun has been floating around?

And how could a gun on display in an armoury go missing?   Isn’t the point of an armoury to safeguard weapons in case of time of need?

If it wasn’t for this source would the public ever know, and of course how many other weapons have gone missing that have also not been reported?

All legitimate questions.   While at the end of the day someone may simply have wanted a souvenir to hang on their wall surely a 9mm submachine gun on the loose is something the community should be concerned over?

What do you think dear CFN viewers?  Does the Armoury need to be investigated?  Should it be allowed to hold any weapons in a city of this size if they can’t be secured?  You can post your comments below.

It’s Time to Dump Marc Bergevin by Jamie Gilcig APRIL 23, 2017

$

Cornwall Ontario – I know.  Montreal fans can be hyper emotional.    This isn’t about that.  It’s been a long two years for Hab fans.   It’s been a long time since their last cup win or even a real close sniff.

Montreal isn’t the worst team in the league, but they are far from the best.

In the cap age it’s difficult to achieve and sustain greatness.  Even the mighty Blackhawks were just swept by the….Nashville Predators.  Hi PK, and you must be having a few private chuckles about les boys falling to the Rangers, especially in the manner they did.

Bergy simply has run out of people to blame.    Right now David Desharnais, PK Subban, and Zach Kassian are moving to the next round.   Marc talks about character, but what struck this writer during the Ranger series is where was the character on this team other than Alex Radulov whom I wrote the team should sign long before they did?

Two 2nd round draft picks for Shaw?  PK Subban was a 2nd rounder.    Dean Lombardi won two cups with the Kings and was just bounced.    What has Bergy accomplished.

While people are pointing fingers at Captain Max Pacioretty, his history in the playoffs was well known.   Carey Price in the playoffs?  Again, stats rarely lie.    Shea Weber is only one player and he probably had one of the best playoffs of his career, not that it was that great, but ultimately who went all in on these characters?   Marc Bergevin.

Claude Julien is a great coach.   You could do a freaking lot worse, but Guy Boucher should have been hired while he was available last year.    Instead the team stuck by Michel Therrien and Ottawa is one win from round two in spite of a cheapskate owner, and less overall talent than Montreal.

The politics of Habs Hockey have done them in now for a generation.  There have been some positive blips.

After Mr. Bergevin is let go the bigger question is what does this team need to move forward?

Does it need a Leafs type blow up?  I think not.    I do think the future of Carey Price in Montreal is not on solid ground any longer.     I think the concept of building a team around a goalie doesn’t work in 2017.   If Price stays in Montreal it would be because he passionately wanted to do so and gave the team a Stamkos discount, as opposed to his last contract.

In the NHL defensive players cost less than offensive stars.   It’s cheaper to build a team defensively, but Montreal fans want offense and wins.  They want to be “The Flying Frenchmen” even if the players aren’t all French.

If you look at the way fans embraced Alex Radulov you don’t need to be Pierre Mcguire to figure out what sells beer and ultimately gets you a shot at Lord Stanley’s Cup.   After over twenty years of stat crunching I know I have a design that would work in today’s NHL.  If I do surely a GM like Marc should have had one?

The Habs have movable assets.  What they need is a true vision, and a GM that can make that happen.  Not a GM that seems to be in a Rotisserie Hockey league and gets excited about getting deals on fringe players who play larger roles.  Or talks about character and then dumps it for…..

There are so many instances that could be pointed out about why this team failed this year, and of course last year’s epic disaster, but I would prefer to look forward.   I’m sure owner Geoff Molson would too. Now it’s up to him to truly make that happen.

And while they’re at it they really should take some steps to break the Curse of Rejean Houle.  It’s ironic that it was the Rangers who defeated the Habs this year as it was the playoffs when I worked for the Habs that started the curse.

What do you think Hab fans?  You can post your comments below.

Giant Rabbit on the Steps of Parliament Hill During 4/20 by Roy Berger

Ottawa Ontario – Peanuts, a giant rabbit, made a surprise appearance on Parliament Hill at the annual civil disobedient  4/20 marijuana smoke out.
“That’s a Continental Giant,” the owner Sarah Brudo said. “I bought him at a Rabbitry in Hamilton [Ontario, Canada] I got him at 7 or 8 weeks old, three years ago. He’s fully grown now at eighteen pounds. He’s been living stress free. He has a disease and I feel that all the petting he gets at big events helps him. I bring him everywhere, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa. I don’t know how long I have with him.”
The event organizers felt that the giant rabbit helped place stoner humour in the correct context and is seen here honoured on the steps of Parliament along with Alex Newcombe and a giant donut.

Rd 2 Picks – Breaking Down the Habs Roster & Why Bergy Isn’t the Guy by Jamie Gilcig APRIL 25, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – I only made playoff pics for the Canadian teams in round one.  I went four for five including the Rangers to defeat Montreal in six games.  (I wish I was wrong on that one, but the curse of Rejean Houle may be too powerful to ever defeat)

I’m not sure I’m a huge fan of a playoff system that has the Penguins playing the Caps in round two?   I think the Caps will have enough to overcome Pittsburgh, but it should be a bloody and amazing series to watch.  It may even go seven games.

I’m predicting Nashville in 5 games.   I think PK will brightly shine in this series.

Edmonton and Anaheim will be an amazing series as well, but I think that Anaheim’s defensive depth and core leadership will nudge them to the next round.

I’m going to throw logic out of the window and pick Ottawa over the Rangers in six games.    Not sure why, but I think Bobby Ryan and Derrick Brassard have something more to prove, and I think the Habs series took a lot out of NY.    Now the Rangers should blow the Sens off the rink, but beating Montreal may have taken the emotional strength out of their legs and Ottawa is a hungry team.  Both are well coached.  NY of course has the edge in goaltending, but King Henrik is beatable.

The Canadiens are at a huge juncture, especially in the cap age.   There are some huge questions on which path to take.

They are a veteran team which may or may not be good.  They are not a fast team and their fast players tend to be a bit light.   They are also currently not a team that is playoff built, but get to the playoffs and that’s just way too Rejean Houle for this writer’s liking.

The players are logged on below with the perception that they’d fit their lines on a good team, not an average or weaker team.  IE, as much as I adore Alex Radulov, he’s not ideally a 1st liner on a championship team.   That’s not to slur the Russian as I’d have him on my team any time and you need players like him to win a cup.

1St Liners:    Max Pacioretty $4.5M 2 years.

2nd Liners:  Alex Radulov UFA, Alex Galchenyuk (as winger) RFA

3rd Liners:  Plekanec $6M 1 year, Shaw $3.9 x 5, Gallagher $3.75×4, Byron $1.16 x2, Danault $912K x1, Lehkonen $839K x 2 (he should be a 2nd liner next season)

4th Liners: Steve Ott UFA

Should not be on a high caliber roster:  Brian Flynn, Torrey Mitchell, Nikita Nesterov.  Any other forwards or D Men not mentioned from the current roster simply don’t fit any of the above roles.

1-2 D men:   Shea Weber $7.8M x 6

3-4 D Men:  Jeff Petry  $5.5 x 4

5-6 D Men:  Andrei Markov UFA, Alexei Emelin $4.1M, Jordie Benn $1.1M x 2, Nathan Beaulieu RFA

Goaltenders:  Carey Price is a high level starting goaltender.  Al Montoya is a high level back up.

So essentially you’re missing 3 top six forwards, critically at Centre, and 2 top 4 D men.  Looking at the farm there is no imminent help.  Many feel that Sergachev has the potential to be Markov 2.0.    None of our other current hopefuls chart out to be top six or top four.

Trends in the NHL are not showing that Free Agency can resolve quick fixes.   Trades for top six centres require top assets moving back.

If I were the GM of the Habs, and I’m not, but if I were, I’d be moving Shea Weber while he has value, and I doubt his value will ever be higher than it is right now moving forward.  Not having a NMC or NTC helps.

I’d be trading Carey Price even if he wanted to stay because the risk to benefit ratio isn’t strong enough for this team paradigm, and frankly the Carey Price will lead us to Nirvana mantra hasn’t worked.   I’m not a fan in tying up major cap dollars in goalies to start with though so I may be jaundiced.

I’d be trading Max Pacioretty too even though the team has no ready replacement simply because of the asset that could be reclaimed with his current value and friendly cap hit that most likely will not occur again. Max simply hasn’t shown enough to my liking other than scoring goals during the regular season.

Tomas Plekanec would hopefully be taken by Vegas, and if not the team can play out his season and see if he’ll take a reasonable contract to finish his career with the team or he should be moved out too.

Andrew Shaw’s contract should be dumped ASAP.  I really have no idea what Bergy was thinking.  People complained about paying Brandon Prust $2.5M, and 2 2nd round picks and this contract make no sense frankly.

The GM and ownership would at that point decide if making the playoffs next season or near tanking would be the way to go.

There is some good news in that the Habs do have some interesting prospects.  I’d like to see Hudon get a full NHL season.  Lehkonen just might be a replacement for Patches on LW if Galchenyuk isn’t with the team or isn’t kept at Centre which looks less and less likely.

I like Brett Lernout a lot, and he just might be able to replace Emelin shortly.

And Charlie Lindgren just might be a suitable replacement for Price even if he never is as good.  Those extra cap dollars might get him more protection in front.

The PK Subban trade was the unravelling of this team.    It just made no sense in 2017, nor was the loyalty to Michael Therrien or JJ Daignault who certainly didn’t bring much improvement to our D squad.

Of course most of this will not happen, and most good GM’s will smell blood in the water if the Habs do shift.

And mostly Marc Bergevin has proved that he’s not the GM to really make strong moves after five seasons.   The NHL isn’t Rotisserie or fantasy hockey and never will be.

The Fans of Montreal deserve a winning team. Short of Toronto there are no more loyal in the league.
