Brockville School Calls in Police Over Swastikas While UCDSB Threatens This Outlet Over CCVS Story MARCH 20, 2017

Cornwall ONTARIO –  What a bewildering community I live in.   After covering Swastikas being left in a school washroom for nearly a month after repeatedly being informed about them this writer covered the issue; which led to thousands of tax dollars being spent by the Upper Canada District School Board essentially trying to muzzle the story.

Their main issue was my opinion that the principal in question at the time, Trish Brown, was in my opinion a racist for leaving them up.   Legal minds have explained to me that in a court of law it might be difficult proving such an opinion which led to those stories being muzzled after a $75K lawsuit landed at my door from the school board.  Apparently in Canada Free speech and your opinion could get you in a lot of trouble in some of our courts, especially in this part of Ontario?

In the meanwhile York U in Toronto called in the police over swastikas on its campus and now a Catholic school in nearby Brockville has done the same after swastikas and hate language were discovered.

Brockville police reported Wednesday that swastikas and other anti-Semitic imagery has shown up in vandalism committed at J.L. Jordan Catholic School, on First Avenue in Brockville, three times this month.

“The number of times we’ve seen them here is a heck of a lot more unusual, yes,” he said, but added “we’re assuming it’s youth by the nature of the graffiti.”
So playing Devil’s Advocate, what would you call Principal Brown’s actions or lack thereof?  In the case at CCVS when this writer attended, vice principal Jason Wagensveld called within an hour to inform me that the swastikas were covered up.

Yet when Principal Brown was contacted by an adult  who’d lost family in the holocaust,  not once but three times(twice by phone and once in person)  and didn’t have them removed what would you call that?   So maybe racism isn’t the correct legal term in a court of law in Eastern Ontario?  Maybe I was wrong for using the term racist?

Shortly after the story broke the community lost someone that was working with the only Jewish group in the community.  They left Cornwall not wanting to live in the community any longer.

Anita Bromberg who was legal counsel for Bnai Brith at the time had given us a comment for publication regarding the incident at CCVS.

“The fact that the chief school administrator failed to act, especially after the matter was brought to her direct attention, is in breach of the Zero Tolerance policy that should have guided her.

.
That she would allow these images of hate to remain, and therefore be etched in the minds of her students, is simply unacceptable.

.
Perhaps it would be appropriate for school board administrators to reinforce what a Zero Tolerance policy actually means?
.
Hopefully because of the dedication of a member of the public school officials and supervisors will do the right thing.”

The Upper Canada District School Board didn’t address the issue publicly.  They brought in a speaker and allowed Principal Brown to address the crowd, but instead of taking a tiny moment to apologize she simply introduced the speaker.

She is no longer at that school and was transferred as she had been in her role from TAGWI before that.
Shades of Project Truth all over again.
Kudos to York University and the Catholic School board.  In 2017 racism should not be tolerated at any level.
A dark blotch on the Upper Canada District School Board, many of the trustees are still there from this incident.

What do you think dear CFN viewers?  If it wasn’t racism what do you think it was?

McGill Fails Andrew Potter & Democracy by Jamie Gilcig MARCH 24, 2017

Cornwall Ontario –  I never graduated McGill University, but it is the only one I’ve attended as a student.  I always thought that McGill was a shining beacon in Montreal, the city where I was born, something to be proud of for all of Canada.

Like many English institutions in la belle province it’s faced many challenges over the years, but it’s truly becoming disturbing to see this once mighty place of learning fall into disrepute.

Recently it failed to truly take a stand over the Igor Sadikov “Punch a Zionist” scandal.  In 2017 there should be no tolerance or room for violence, especially on a campus of young people.

It’s even more boggling that the school itself seems to have taken more of a stand against Andrew Potter than Mr. Sadikov.

Andrew Potter was a former editor of the Ottawa Citizen.   He wrote a piece for Maclean’s magazine that probably has drawn more eyeballs than any other piece of the long time mag in generations all because he pierced the insecurity and xenophobia that haunts so many in this province.

While he may have taken some flourishes, as his knee jerk politically correct apology for his column explained, ultimately he was forced to resign his position as director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada.

It frankly is shocking.  While any piece of journalism is always up for criticism; for it to lead to a termination of a position in this manner simply is embarrassing and unacceptable.    Far worse has been written and said about Toronto for example, by many in Quebec without a flicker of comment or suggestion of loss of income or position.
As someone that was born and grew up in Montreal, and then left Quebec due to its many issues with non pur laine folk, much of what he wrote resonated.
Montreal is not Quebec.   It really isn’t.  Politically it’s English, or allophone, culture and history has been bashed and buried for the most part.  Right now the government is trying to rejig some ridings even in what appears to be a thinly veiled attempt to water down the Mont Royal riding which has a large English population, and other areas where anglophones habitate.
While transit workers who refused to speak English to people, or even Paramedics have refused to speak English to people;  how does Andrew Potter lose his three year contract and they not theirs?   Is that not utterly insane?
Stephane Giroux is a popular broadcaster and journalist.  I personally was shocked as he most definitely has the tools to legitimately have criticized Mr. Potter’s piece.   And who are his people?  Even if he was incensed by Andrew’s piece why sink to raging stereotypical East End PQ ranting which in my opinion opened another channel of floodgates of abuse and pressure?     Mr. Giroux pulled his thread on social media after the Potter apology, but the damage was done as Potter resigned the next day.
Lots of lively debate about this subject including with Mr. Giroux, who essentially brushed off my suggestion of bullying because of my previous comments about Quebec.    I don’t hate the city I was born in.     I miss the Montreal I grew up in because most of those I grew up with have left.  Most of the institutions I knew are gone.   I’m not sure Steph would ever consider me one of “his people”.    While Montreal may be the biggest city in Quebec, it’s a different world than the rest of the Province.  Quebec is a part of Montreal, but it has a totally different history and culture no matter what some people say and think.
And that was chiefly part of the focus of Mr. Potter’s piece.   As an outsider he shared a most unflattering reflection of Quebec via incidents in Montreal.   He posted statistics.  He offered positions.   He wrote a piece that could have led to actual debate and maybe discussion, which is what good journalists do.     He pressed buttons and those reactions essentially proved his point.  He did not deserve to resign or be fired over this.
McGill, as many far more knowledgeable than myself have written, has now created a situation where many academics may fear what they write will lead them to Potterville.   That silences a lot of voices.  That should never be what true places of education should be about.
How do we test ideas and concepts if we can’t debate and argue them without abuse or threat of job loss?
Should we all pressure the TV station that Mr. Giroux works at to fire him because of being offended about what he posted to Mr. Potter?
At the end of the day this is simply another example that highlights the failings of  a once great province, city, and university.   I personally find that very sad.  I probably will take heat for this piece and maybe even lose a few friends.
Luckily I can’t be fired for writing this.

Lawrence Greenspon to Defend CFN vs UCDSB Over Swastikas in CCVS by Jamie Gilcig MARCH 26, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – What should happen when Swastikas or other Hate Graffiti are discovered in a school washroom?

If you’re York University, or a high school in Brockville Ontario, or this high school in the US, perhaps a letter like this outlines the appropriate actions?

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

I want to share with you information about an event that took place at Westland.  I am sending you this letter to give you the facts and to assure you that we are addressing this incident.

One of our boys’ bathrooms was vandalized with multiple images of swastikas drawn in ink pen, in pencil and with glue stick.

Once we were informed about the images we immediately secured the location, contacted the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) and contacted the Montgomery County Public Schools office of school support and improvement.  After appropriate documentation by our staff and by the police our building services staff removed the vandalism.

We are very saddened by this incident.  This type of behavior will not be tolerated.  Once the culprit(s) are identified, consequences will be administered in accordance with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.

We will continue to work closely with police, as well as MCPS security, on this investigation.   If you have further questions, please call the school at 301.320.6515.

Sincerely,

Alison L. Serino   Principal

That sadly didn’t happen when former CCVS and current Glengarry High School principal Patricia “Trish” Brown was informed of Swastikas in a boy’s washroom not once, but three times by a former resident of Cornwall Ontario who cited this experience as a factor in their leaving the community.

The man had lost family in the Holocaust and after two weekly attempts by phone, and one in person, asked this writer to attend the school where the Swastikas were still in the same location after about a month.

A VP at the school notified this writer within an hour that the hate graffiti was removed, and apologized.  At that point I’d written a story which was picked up in print and online.

Now kids are kids.   Graffiti happens, and CCVS I was told had a team for its removal, and is normally a very clean facility.

The school’s reaction was to bring in a speaker to talk to the kids, but the real issue in many people’s eyes was Principal Brown not removing the Swastikas in a reasonable amount of time; or frankly at all as it was VP Jason Wagensveld (who’s now been promoted to principal of Viscount Alexander Public School) that had them covered.

David K Thomas, the former head of the UCDSB was allowed to mysteriously retire, and Trish was moved on to Glengarry High, as she’d moved from TAGWI before that.   There is a parent who has alleged that Principal Brown’s handling, or mishandling, of a case of bullying of her sons led to her departure from TAGWI to CCVS.  That matter is still under investigation.

The school board hired a major Toronto Law Firm (Miller Thomson) after I wrote that in my opinion at that time I felt that Ms Brown was racist.   They issued suit for $75,000, which was dropped after I removed the stories.  In other words, bury the story or else….

Then York University in Toronto had its own Swastika incident.  I again wrote about it and again Miller Thomson  went on the attack, and this time after consulting a local lawyer, was told that I might not be able to prove that Principal Brown was in fact racist.   The law works differently than we lay people do.    Again, that content came down.

Then the Brockville incident.   This time however I explained about the racism comment and asked our viewers to vote on their definition.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Sure enough our viewers didn’t feel it was racism, but this time when Miller Thomson essentially sent the same copy and paste threat I decided to stand my ground.

Excerpts unedited of their letter.

As someone that’s written over 10,000 pieces on CFN without ever having to write a cheque for not writing the truth; (or any other reason) being told by a lawyer that what I’ve written was a lie was frankly insulting.   I sent a letter back to the School board via Miller Thomson.  (unedited)

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Please inform your client (the Upper Canada District School board)  that they have twenty four (24) hours from receipt of this email to publish an apology to myself, and the community of Cornwall for their actions in this horrible abuse of power on their website, social media, and on all Cornwall area media outlets at their own cost..
.
Furthermore the UCDSB will donate at least $25,000.00 to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Toronto.   LINK
.
Whomever at the school board is responsible for initiating this latest action, and previous acts of threats and bullying to myself, as well as the handling of the situation that not only didn’t see police called in when the swastikas were discovered, but when it came to light that they had not been removed in a reasonable amount of time,  will immediately resign or be removed from their positions.
.
The remaining board members, if any,  will immediately initiate sensitivity training regarding anti-semitism and racism.
.
The remaining board members, if any,  will announce an initiative to support diversity on its own board which currently shows no visible minorities.
.
A proper outside investigation of former Board Director David Thomas and Principal Brown will be made including the incident at TAGWI that occurred shortly before she left.  Proper actions will be taken after said investigation.
.
Please confirm delivery of this email to your client, and their response.
.
The World is now watching, and if all of these terms are not met then appropriate actions will be taken.
Diversity and sensitivity may be an issue for the school board which has no visible minorities on its board or senior management.

It seems boggling that a school board would be burning through major legal cash when it’s closing twelve area schools  including CCVS, and getting worse rankings for its local secondary schools according to the Fraser Institute as well.

It was at this point that famed Ottawa attorney Lawrence Greenspon of Greenspon, Brown & Associates agreed to defend any action in this David and Goliath case.

I seek no personal gain.  At the end if any monies are won they will be donated to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre after legal costs.   Frankly I think the demands in my letter to the UCDSB via Miller Thomson are quite reasonable given the scope of what’s happened.

Sometimes in life we have to stand up for what’s right.  And when we do it’s always better when others stand up with us.    The only way to defeat certain behaviors is to stand up and stay your ground.

This is a community where Racism and Anti-Semitism do exist.

When this was posted on social media the public defended the use of the term “Jewed” which clearly was racist in the context of its use.

I would like to see this situation eventually educate and help make this a better community, and make sure that we’re raising better children who while becoming more sensitive to the perils of racism, also learn about accountability and how to become responsible adults in a better fashion and deal with issues like this when they occur.

At this point someone or some people have to take account for what’s transpired.    I also am going to be accountable and apologize to Principal Brown for calling her a racist.  Here is my apology:

After much consideration I have decided to apologize for any confusion or offense regarding the use of the term racist in sharing my opinion about the actions of former CCVS, and current Glengarry District High school Secondary Principal Patricia (Trish) Brown who left  swastikas up in a washroom at the school for approximately one month instead of having them promptly removed.

My use of the term came from my root experience of having lost so many family members to the Holocaust; from researching Nazi Germany, and in particular the diaries and works of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels for the work I created which resulted in the 2003 Oscar nominated Best Feature Documentary Prisoner of Paradise, and from my experience with Anti Semitism, and Racism in the Cornwall & SD&G Area.
I now understand that we come from different perspectives, and that there may be in fact another explanation as to why Ms Brown, after repeated requests by another adult that had lost family in the Holocaust, did not have the swastikas promptly removed, or call the police and report them.
.
At the end of the day is this issue really about graffiti, or my use of a term, or is it about the actions or lack thereof of a Principal entrusted with not only the education, but security of the children that attend a school?
.
What do you think dear CFN viewers?  You can post your comments below.

Dana Larsen Gave Away Marijuana Seeds In Ottawa, so there! by Roy Berger MARCH 31, 2017

OTTAWA ONTARIO –   Dana Larsen is from Vancouver, owns two marijuana dispensaries, is the author of four books and a prior editor of Cannabis Culture Magazine. He is on a multi-city Canadian tour with a mission to discuss marijuana in terms of it’s history, legislation, adherents and critics. At the same time, he has advice regarding opening marijuana dispensaries. This year he has a goal to give away five million marijuana seeds. So far, “I have given away about two and a half million.”

“Ottawa is the twelfth city in my tour. Montreal was a full house. Quebec City went well. I did my talks in Quebec in French or at least in Fringlish. Peterborough, Toronto, London, Windsor are next.”
“Calgary will be my last stop. Only there did the cops have an issue with the marijuana seed give-a-way. It’s odd because there are eighteen shops there that sell seeds.”

The City of Ottawa played host to Dana Larsen by way of the Canterbury Community Centre on Arch Street last night on March 30th.

There were about a hundred people in the audience with a good portion of it sporting grey hair. A table had been set up to provide copies of four of Mr. Larsen’s books, several salves and of course, vast quantities of marijuana seeds packaged in discreet white envelopes. Each envelope contained a hundred marijuana seeds which if grown and properly trimmed and cured would have a street value of hundreds of millions of dollars were they valued at the same rate as current cannabis stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

At about seven that evening for about an hour Dana spoke.

“I’m excited and honoured to be a part of this,” he told a welcoming audience. “In 1606, a friend of Champlain planted the first fields of marijuana in Canada. Hemp was absolutely essential to the world’s navy’s for rigging and rope. Soon the world was dependent on Russian hemp who were growing the vast majority of it. England was sending prisoners to Australia to grow hemp. Napoleon would attack Russia to prevent England from having access to Russian hemp.

“From 1850 to 1900 over a hundred research papers would be written about medicinal marijuana. Parke-Davis would become a significant supplier of marijuana. They used dogs to test cannabis strength and reactions. In 1895, the Nova Scotia Medical Journal ran a paper on medicinal marijuana that could have been written last week.  Marijuana was legal and not a big deal at the time.

“How did we get here, how did we get to the point of locking up and persecuting so many? Certainly, a book called, The Black Candle by Janey Canuck, which became a best seller and was serialized in Maclean’s Magazine, had an influence. And certainly, Mackenzie King lead the charge to pass laws by way of the Ministry of Labour.  Harry Forbes is the earliest record of a guy arrested for marijuana joints in 1938.  Marijuana cigarettes that he had purchased at a local drug store got Mr. Forbes six months of hard labour. The illegalization laws had passed with hardly any notice leaving surprised farmers to see whole fields being burnt up by the RCMP.

“And of course, during the 1960’s and 70’s when marijuana use was growing in usage the laws became harsh.”
“Prior to the 1980’s a lot of Canada’s marijuana was imported but the ability to grow indoors began to change with technology. Prohibition laws increased under Brian Mulroney. Are you aware that bongs and vaporizers remain illegal all over Canada?

“Opening a marijuana dispensary is the modern method of civil disobedience against these prohibition laws. The clear majority of dispensaries re-open after being raided.

“Marijuana will become legal in stages. It won’t come all at once. The Feds will make their laws, the Provinces will mull them over…it will come in stages.
“The Large Producers have lost control over the cannabis movement. That’s why I’m going across the country. We overgrow the government by transparently and peacefully participating in this civil disobedience. And when one fellow must step a side someone else will take their place and another that person’s place. You can’t wait for Trudeau. Overwhelm them. I want you to be able to say, “I did something” so that future generations don’t have to fear and risk prison. Join me in planting these seeds to reap a harvest of freedom.

“There’s plenty of opportunity to open lots more dispensaries. Marijuana won’t be legal this year or the next. The Feds are just laying down rules that the provinces will deal with years later. I recommend you open a medical dispensary first. Find support from Mayors and City Councillors. Perhaps have a delivery service as opposed to a storefront for medical. Hire Med-patients that have all the government approved documentation so they can possess and handle the product. With the delivery service, you can go to people’s houses, interview them and check the paperwork. Take a chance and go for it. But do think about the risks. Think about what you figure is the worst that could happen. If you aren’t prepared for that then this isn’t for you. There are other avenues you can explore. Start a vapour lounge. If you can help people commit civil disobedience and channel some of that money back into the movement it would be a great thing. Most dispensaries open without a licence. Dispensaries are going to be with us a long time. The Federal government will stall and delay and I think local communities will come to tolerate it.

“The Pride parade was a scary thing and now politicians want to be in front of it. They will eventually stand in front of 4/20. These cannabis companies on the stock market who are scrambling to sell marijuana never supported the cannabis movement and in fact supported the drug war. There should be a moratorium on arrests. Check out the website at OvergrowCanada.com. Any questions?”

About half the audience lined up to buy books, take seeds and have further conversations with Dana Larsen.

Is Denis Thibault of the EOTB & Miller Hughes Ford Supporting Racist Media? APRIL 3, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – A loyal CFN viewer sent in a screen cap early in the morning upset and questioning whether it was racist to single out someone because of their ethnicity in reporting?

They were upset at the wording and singling out of one driver as Chinese.    Not sure how media blogger Bill Kingston of Cornwall Newswatch would have that info as the police blotters supplied by law enforcement usually don’t ID speeders by name or nationality?

Maybe it simply might be weak journalism or grasp of language?   Maybe it could have been worded as “Driver from China?”  Or simply have published their name if it was available?

The OPP usually release a group of speeders in one shot with how fast they were going.

Of course there are some cliches about Asian drivers that have been grist for comedians for ages.

Either way the click bait headline does seem a bit odd?

Kelly Coulter Price Crunching Legal Marijuana vs Black Market APRIL 09, 2017

$

VICTORIA BC – Let’s just say that, hypothetically speaking, the current black market in Canada is based on three models of cultivation. The first model is the seasonal outdoor grower, the second is the hobby indoor grower and the third is the commercial indoor grower. Model one harvests every fall and sells his/her crop based on market prices which vary greatly from province to province, in the vicinity of 900-2500 dollars per pound. The second model harvests casually and sells privately and in small amounts ranging from 125-250 an ounce. The third group harvests every 3 weeks to 90 days and sells based on market prices ranging anywhere from $1400 to $3000.

According to a recent article in Lift, the average price of a gram of cannabis in a dispensary is $10, which equates to $4535 per pound. This price is based on a perverted/distorted marketplace and should not be taken into consideration when trying to set acceptable tax structure. Unfortunately, this is what is being done, and it is a critical mistake.

Examining the profit margins

If the average profit margin on 100 pounds of cannabis, based on an annual harvest for models one and two, is 90-250K and 2-10K respectively, cannabis cultivation would appear to remain profitable and worthwhile. For model three, an annual yield can bring in millions of dollars depending on the size of the operation. Model three also happens to be the most expensive cultivation method and the easiest to trace.

The only way the mandate to defund organized crime will be fulfilled is to effectively remove profit incentive. The fact that only 5% of the cannabis trade is affiliated with “organized crime” should make this goal attainable, but this does not mean that the black market is going anywhere at all. In the wild and wacky world of weed, the average cultivator, farmer and consumer are not gun-wielding gangsters, but ordinary folks who either enjoy farming and the additional income or are just growing a bit extra to subsidize their own consumption.

Defunding organized crime

If the federal government really wants to defund organized crime, two things need to happen. The government should do a cost analysis of what it really costs to produce a pound of weed and then tax accordingly at a rate, bringing the final retail price in under, or close to, what would make this commodity so profitable for the “bad guys.” The current large commercial indoor grow-ops that are typically favoured for covert operations are not the most cost-effective method. By adopting and incentivizing more visible, environmentally-friendly and naturally-grown cannabis the government will effectively kill two birds with one stone.

In the future, the price of cannabis will likely become more in line with other agricultural commodities.  If we approach this from a public safety standpoint, and not from a distorted version of what has been the norm for far too long, the potential for success increases. We have to be prepared to think differently—this is likely our greatest challenge moving forward.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Cornwall, ON – The Cornwall Community Police Service along with the Cornwall Fire Department would like to remind the public that the use of volatile substances even under controlled circumstances is extremely dangerous and could cause serious bodily harm or even death.

The cause of two recent fires in the city of Cornwall has been directly linked to the illegal practice of extracting cannabis resin from marijuana to produce a substance known as “shatter”. “Not only is the practice illegal, it is very dangerous and unpredictable. You are basically in your house with a time bomb” stated S/Sgt Frazer. We encourage the public to come forward with any information about anyone who might be engaged in such a practice in the hopes of preventing further destructive and life threatening situations.
