Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne Cuts Diabetes Test Strip Funding as of August 1st

Wynne MinimaxCFN – Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is being hailed as a villain by many Seniors and patients with type 2 diabetes after it was discovered that strips used to test patients blood will be limited and in some cases not covered by Provincial health plans any longer in a bid to save the Province $25M per year.

The penny wise pound foolish move would impact over 150,000 patients.  The strips cost approximately .75 cents per, but some patients test multiple times per day and costs add up, especially for seniors or those on fixed incomes.

test_strips

As of August, instead of testing as prescribed by their doctors patients will be limited to 200-400 strips annually with those on Insulin granted more.

CFN received comment from Progressive Conservative Health Critic Christine Elliot;

I’m disappointed to hear yet another short sighted announcement from the Liberal government to cut millions in funding for diabetes management tools.  This decision doesn’t take into account people’s desire to take control of their own health care and ultimately, the cut may end up costing the province more through increased complications and hospitalizations that could have otherwise been prevented.

What do you think Ontario viewers of CFN?  Is this going to really save the Province money in the long run?   You can post your comments below.

Long Sault Farmer’s Market Well Attended on August 16, 2013 by Reg Coffey

Long Sault Market 16Aug13

CFN – It was a busy day on the grass in front of the Long Sault Shopping Centre. We knew it was going to be busy when early shoppers started asking Andrew from Avonmore Berry Farm for corn before he even opened the tail gate on his truck. By the time he got his tent up there was a steady stream of customers. As you can see from the picture above they are still harvesting those sweet luscious strawberries and more and more apples are ripening.

As part of our mandate at the Long Sault Market, we are proud to provide space for community fundraisers. This week the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation of Canada set up a tent to host a bake sale to raise funds for their cause.

It was a good day for all of us vendors. There was the usual rush for the Friday Thai fix at Thai to Go. The squares, cookies, and gluten free scones at Daisy Street Cakes were selling like hotcakes. Hoople Creek Farm had Russian garlic on their table among other organic produce. The tomatoes and peppers were red and ripe at the Ingleside Tomatoes booth. Swiss Farmer Bakery had their usual decadent baked treats. Jars of sweet delight were moving off of Clarkburn Farmer’s table (being sold that is) and Crystal’s Bowtique and Little Bird Sewing were busy selling their crafts as well.

Rumour has it that the market will be growing by to more vendors. OK, it’s not a rumour but a reality. We have a new canned goods vendor who has his own style of preserves, pickles, beets, jams and we have a homemade fudge and chocolate entrepreneur.

Yes, I said “HOMEMADE FUDGE AND CHOCOLATE”!

Be sure to make time on Friday afternoon to come and join us on the grass in Long Sault. The market is open from 2 PM to 6 PM every Friday afternoon until October 11th, rain or shine, unless there is a tornado warning, then we may close early.

And remember, if you come early for corn, at least give Andrew time to get his tent up.

Working Less & Attending My First Gay Wedding by Jamie Gilcig – August 18, 2013

$

jg2CFN – So on doctors orders I’ve had to cut back my work load.   The seven days per week 100+ gay marriagehours thing after nearly five years has had its toll.

But I still like to have fun and it’s not like I’m working in a coal mine or factory although it feels that way sometimes.

It’s Ironic and funny that now that I am curtailing my availability to events I’m getting more and more invites?

Yesterday I attended a wedding.  Now family and friends know I hate weddings.  Heck, I hated my own even.   Not because I didn’t love my ex-wife or didn’t want to marry her; but it meant flying and it meant dealing with her family and friends, many of whom hated me because I took their beloved to Eastern Ontario from beautiful BC.

But Saturday’s wedding was very different.  For one it was the first Gay wedding I was ever to attend and it had a Hawaiian motif, and as anyone that knows me knows I love my Hawaiian shirts!

And I didn’t have to fly!   It was at a lovely golf course.  The grooms wore white for the ceremony, and the shafts of titanium bonked golf balls behind the lovely trio that serenaded the couple to the tune of Bolero as they made their entrance.

Gay Marriage has been one of the hottest topics in the news in 2013.   It really has and frankly it’s odd and bewildering to me.   I stood back, enjoying my Bombay Gin & Tonic watching some of the onlookers cry tears of happiness for the couple.

Was it really that different than a heterosexual wedding?  Not really.   At the end of the day and debate on the subject it’s such a huge thing for any couple to lay it on the line and make that lifetime commitment.    It was a lovely joining of two lives.

Being single again at my advanced age is bewildering.   Did I have pangs of jealousy for the Happy couple who were about to embark on this magical journey that nearly 40% end up in divorce within 8 years?

No.  It was just a beautiful day, in a beautiful place, where I got to share a beautiful moment with the 200 or so guests and family.

Shakespeare was famous for starting epic tales with lightning and storms.  You know everyone was safe when the sun shined and birds sang and flew.

Watching two doves released at the wedding gave me hope;not just for an old single guy like me, but for the world.    If we can accept each other for whom we are that’s half the battle.

And at that lovely ceremony we all won…..except that the couple were afraid of me outing them in this story.  Progress always comes in steps.  As long as they’re in the right direction we all get to move forward.

Liberal Del Jones of Morrisburg Ontario Looks Forward to the End of the Harper Government – LTE Aug 19, 2013

harperEach day that passes we are one day closer to the end of the Harper government and for me that is enough motivation to work hard on behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and Justin Trudeau.

Mr. Harper’s comments that Liberals have “dangerous ideas” and their proposals are “so extreme they would make the worst European budget look solid in comparison” are childish and ridiculous.  Really Mr. Harper, is fear-mongering the best you can do?

Previous Liberal governments implemented a universal health care system, established the Canada Pension Plan, gained the respect of the world through leadership in peace-keeping initiatives, and kept the country out of a needless war in Iraq. And of course, the last nine years Liberals were in office they ran surpluses that ensured Canada was better positioned to withstand the 2008 financial collapse than any other major industrial country.

And what dangerous ideas will a 2015 Liberal government bring to the table? How about national leadership on health care, a focus on income security for an aging population and a compassionate, caring government that makes decisions based on evidenced-based research and social justice for all Canadians.

Continue to fear-monger Mr. Harper and Liberals across Canada will continue to prepare for government in the 21st century. And I will rise every day and celebrate knowing that we are one day closer to the end of the one-man, Harper government.

Drivers can expect to see an increased police presence. Adjust your driving, pay attention and be prepared to stop for children and school buses. Make it safe for everyone!

Cornwall Ontario Becomes Further Isolated As Greyhound Announces Service Cuts to River City by Jamie Gilcig

Kilger Bench BLUECFN – When you’re busy zooming to Ottawa in your speedy cruiser like Bob Kilger does it can be easy to not think about public transportation, but even our Mayor  saw his city take another hit to its Inter-City Transportation as Greyhound announced it was cutting back service to the city due to lack of interest.

Of course if you have infrequent schedules and no stop within the city limits with almost no advertising the question turns into a chicken and egg one.  Is it that the public doesn’t want the service or that the service itself is turning off the public?

Via Rail recently announced that it was dumping human staff at the Cornwall station recently and the city itself balked at taking the former Tourism property from the Province which would be ideal as an Inner & Inter city hub as well as a great tourism facility right at the foot of the new $75M bridge.

This isn’t a new problem for the River City.   It’s been written about for nearly two years now.   One Delaney2politico suggested recently that this was payback to the Kilger government as some of the bus companies felt that the city spending money with Delaney Bus service hurt their bottom lines.    Economic Development did a lovely wrap of one of the Delaney Buses that may have caused the ire of Greyhound and Megabus that have lost commuter traffic to Ottawa.

If we can subsidize student doctors and if other cities can help subsidize public transportation maybe it’s time for our city to start thinking of the critical importance that having proper Intercity transportation means?

So CFN viewers is it the chicken and the egg and how does not having reliable and well scheduled transportation impact you?

Dr. Paul & EOHU Don’t Send HEAT WARNING TO CFN Putting Public Safety in Danger – Aug 21, 2013

eohuCFN –     The EOHU under Dr. Paul  Roumeliotis boycotts CFN.  No releases. No ads.

But to withhold safety notices is something that the Unit and province should be embarrassed about.    CFN is not one person.  In August we are on pace for over 71,000 Unique visitors.  We have several times the traffic of our nearest rival and are the most read media in the city where his office sits.

There are people who don’t read CFN.  There are people who don’t read the Standard Freeholder.

When you are a tax dollar paid agency you send out notices to all of the media.   To allow petty politics to play potential havoc with the public’s safety is something that frankly should never ever be allowed to happen.

We emailed Dr. Paul today, but as of print time he has not responded.  He’s probably safely ensconced in an air conditioned room…

The city of Cornwall has no emergency plan in place for today’s heat either.  Their website was down for several hours today as well so there was no notification regarding heat issues.  Nor was there any mention on their facebook page.

Here is the alert in full for our viewers safety and comfort.

High Heat Alert
2013-08-21
With extremely hot weather in the forecast for the next few days, the Health Unit is warning residents of the five Eastern Counties to take special care to prevent heat-related illness.
During extremely hot weather, anyone can suffer heat-related illness when their body is unable to compensate for the extreme temperatures and cannot properly cool. But some groups are more vulnerable than others, including young children, the elderly, people who exercise vigorously or who are involved in strenuous work outdoors for prolonged periods, as well as individuals on medication and the chronically ill.
There are a number of things that people can do to prevent heat-related illness:
• Drink plenty of water and avoid liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine or large amounts of sugar.
• Stay indoors. Stay cool by taking cool showers or wetting your hands, face and the back of your neck.
• Wear light, loose fitting clothes, a hat and sunscreen when outdoors.
• Avoid vigorous exercise in the heat (this includes children as well). If you have a young child, or a child with a chronic respiratory condition such as asthma, do not allow them to participate in sporting events or to exercise during heat waves, especially when there is a heat/humidity advisory in effect.
• Keep your home cool by limiting the use of your oven/stove.
• Turn off unnecessary lights.
• Keep windows slightly open during the day.
• At night, open windows wide to cool the house.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
• If your home does not have air-conditioning, take breaks from the heat by going to air-conditioned buildings; grocery stores and shopping malls are great options.
• Check up regularly on friends, family and/or neighbours who may be at high risk during a heat wave.
Extreme heat can cause many health problems, including cramps, dizziness, headache, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can be fatal if left untreated.

OutCare Foundation Announces Telemedicine Initiative for Palliative Care in Champlain Region – Aug 22, 2013

CFN – The OutCare Foundation is pleased to announce that telemedicine is now being used for palliative care throughout the Champlain region. Thanks to the success of its recent Telelink fundraising campaign, more patients with a terminal illness can access the care they need.

Telelink uses the latest technology to connect 12 palliative care sites to the Ontario Telemedicine Network’s (OTN) secure videoconferencing network. High definition video-conferencing equipment makes it possible to bring teams hundreds of kilometers apart together for meetings and distance education. Used by over 1,600 healthcare sites across Ontario, this is the first time that hospices in our community are connecting to palliative care teams in acute care settings such as hospitals using this technology.

Nurses, doctors and others involved in palliative care can now discuss complex cases and conduct clinical consultations from a distance. They, along with their team of volunteers, can participate in up-to-date training on topics such as pain and symptom management, without the need to travel.

“Patients love it, particularly those who live far from Ottawa,” says Dr. José Pereira, head of Palliative Care at The Ottawa Hospital and Bruyère Continuing Care. “It saves them driving to those hospitals for follow-up appointments, waiting for a long time to see the doctor for a short visit and then driving back home. Now they can visit the hospice or hospital in their community and connect with the palliative care specialist team remotely.”

The benefit of the latest research and access to specialist-level advice is often not accessible quickly across the region,” he adds. “Telelink will help to close the gap.”

For the over 6,000 patients served annually by these sites the benefits include timely treatment, reduced travel and improved care, resulting in a better experience.

The increased expertise that we can now access enables our clients to remain at Hospice Renfrew while receiving the best care possible,” says Diane Caughey, executive director of Hospice Renfrew. “Staying in their community, close to friends and family, is incredibly important at this time in their lives.”

When the Champlain Hospice Palliative Care Program – the regional authority – approached the OutCare Foundation about this project, OutCare recognized the great potential impact of Telelink. “By connecting the palliative community, we knew that this project could play a powerful role in the quality of care available to those who need it,” explained chairman, John Bradley. “It just made sense for OutCare – the only charity raising funds for regional palliative care – to take on the challenge of making Telelink happen.” Thanks to generous donors and supporters this $380,000 project is expanding palliative care expertise throughout Eastern Ontario.

About the OutCare Foundation

The OutCare Foundation is the only charity devoted to raising funds for palliative care across Eastern Ontario. It supports patients and their families by raising money for projects, such as Telelink. With expert advice from the Champlain Hospice Palliative Care Program, OutCare selects high-priority projects with a regional impact so that regardless of which organization families turn to, they receive the skilled and compassionate help they need and deserve.

Over the years, the Foundation has provided $1.5 million in support for programs and services throughout our community. Whether helping to make more care available, supporting caregivers, or ensuring proper training is offered, OutCare donors are making a difference.

SD&G PC MPP Jim McDonell Rally at Ontario Quebec Border in Support of Bill 80 Fairness Is a Two Way Street

mcdonell Bill 80CFN – Today, local contractors and the Greater Ottawa Truckers’ Association welcomed MPP Jim McDonell and MPP Jack MacLaren to Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry to discuss MPP MacLaren’s Bill 80, Fairness Is a Two-Way Street Act, 2013, during a demonstration at the Ontario-Quebec border on Highway 2. Originally introduced by the Harris Government in 1999, the Fairness is a Two-Way Street Act addressed the barriers Ontario workers faced when wishing to work in Quebec by placing an equal burden on Quebeccontractors wishing to carry out work in Ontario. The original Act was repealed by the Liberal Government in 2006 due to the ratification of the Labour Mobility Agreement, which Quebec has yet to implement fully.

 mcdonell bill 80 2

MPP McDonell commented: “Real labour mobility ensures the Canadian workforce can prosper across provincial boundaries. However,Quebec places unfair restrictions on out-of-province workers and contractors which are not reflected in Ontario law, placing Ontarians at a disadvantage. This impacts my constituents particularly strongly due to our proximity to the border.  Ontario’s truck drivers, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers are just some of skilled trades people who are prevented from working in Quebec, while they watch Quebec workers prosper on Ontario job sites.  Fair is fair, and it is time for Quebec to open up their borders to out-of-province workers, so that Ontarians and Canadians as a whole will benefit.”

MPP Jack MacLaren added: “Unquestionably, Canadians should be free to work in any part of our country. However the Quebec Government has created a never ending tangled web of requirements and regulations for the sole purpose of keeping Ontario workers out of the Quebec market. Ontario construction workers are being shut out. Fairness must be a two-way street.”

Bill 80 will restrict Quebec-based contractors and workers from bidding on and signing private and public contracts for work unless they register with the Director of the Jobs Protection Office, provide financial statements, and pay set fees and security bonds.

Standing at the border marker, Ron Barr, General Manager of the Greater Ottawa Truckers’ Association, summed up the challenges faced by Ontario workers:

“We go over there. We’re compliant. We get stopped. They go over here, they’re not even checked.”

Bill 80 is scheduled for Second Reading on September 12, 2013.

Does Courtesy Exist in Our World Anymore? I dig into that Pink Autistic Child Rant Letter by Jamie Gilcig

$
0
0

autism letterCFN –   Please be forewarned to read and think before reacting to this piece.  It’s not defending the author of the letter above  nor is it in any way condoning some of the horrible sentiments in the letter above that has gone viral.

Obviously a distraught, frustrated, bat shit crazy , maybe child hating woman sent this anonymous letter to the mother of an autistic child.

We live in a society that has less and less accountability, and less penalties for crossing the lines of courtesy and respect for each other; our neighbors, and to some degree ourselves.   Our society has devolved.   Some may blame degenerated families and babies raising babies.  Some might point a figure at a Zeitgeist of entitlement.   My child is allergic to peanuts so the entire school can’t eat peanut butter sandwiches any longer type thinking….

People talk about bullying; but do we teach our children how to deal with bullying?  Do we as a species want to hold up those that simply can’t move to the front of the pack as pack leaders?   Is it not human for dominance to be asserted and isn’t that process a life lesson that young people need to survive as adults and pass down to their children?

Common courtesies such as holding a door for someone; giving up a seat; letting someone in line at the grocery store that only has an item or two seem passe.

Children in restaurants or public places; with conditions or not screaming and fit throwing with no real attempt of control?  Pets dropping or being destructive or noisy going unchecked.   (when they’re not uncaringly left in cars to die of heat)

Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden being given 35 year sentences while shooting an unarmed teenager equals zero are not rarities in our society.

Some of the biggest crimes have never nor will ever even be publicly shared.

We live in a world of monsters.   And sometimes people react.  They blow up.   We see this on the news almost regularly.  We see children mowed down in schools.  We see children killed by Chemical weapons in places like Syria.

There seems to be no forethought about retribution for actions or deeds?

When I read that pink letter above as offensive as it is I hear a voice of someone that’s horribly frustrated and probably near their tipping point.

How horrible a strain it must be for the parent of that child.  24/7 care with probably nowhere near the support they need.    20-30 years ago children like that might be in residential facilities.   While out of the public’s sight for the most part it was decided that it would be better to integrate patients into society.   There were studies to prove it was the right move, but what happened here in Ontario and in most places is that the supports were not really put in place.   A lot of people were lost and fell through the cracks.  Have you seen movies or tv shows where ex-cons commit crimes right away because they felt safer in prison?

There is a whole industry given to the care of people with developmental handicaps.   They’re usually strained and underfunded.

People with mental illnesses are usually just drugged up instead of really treated.   Sometimes a patient will not take their meds or sometimes they just have not been diagnosed or treated properly and they become Sammy Yatim; or they end up suffering and causing suffering.   Many times they end up in jail.

Or in suicide that then is covered up.

You see I’m a grumpy old man.     As editor of a newspaper I see and hear things which I can’t even print for a number of reasons.   I see the inhumanity that exists within humanity.

And it’s not getting better.  It’s corrupt.  It’s broken; and frankly if people are not aware how can they fix it?   How can you hold someone accountable if they  don’t know what’s been done?

Even in our fair city of Cornwall we have two whistleblowing cases.   We have elected officials brutally beating down opposition and spending millions of tax dollars to cover up and defend their positions which the public barely know much about.  We have the person who committed elder abuse in a seniors residence still working while the people that reported him have suffered immensely.   Does that make sense?

I myself was the victim of abuse by elected officials using police force to manhandle a situation.  While that is now being dealt with what’s most alarming is that certain agencies that claim to be there to protect our rights or raise millions fighting for rights of other people hide from this issue just like so many people hide from bigger issues.

At the end of the day it all starts with personal courtesy and personal accountability.   And that’s something that’s hard to change.

Have you ever stopped someone in a grocery checkout line who clearly had double or triple the amount of items in an express line?   Horrified looks from the cashier and usually some guff from the goofball who clearly doesn’t care that others may need to get through a line quickly.

Have you ever blown the whistle on something?   Usually the messenger is treated horribly.  Today our MPP even stated that health care agencies in Ontario are afraid to voice concerns about matters for fear of losing their funding.   Can you even envision how sinister and wrong that truly is?

If you’re still reading at this point I probably should apologize.  I know I’m venting to an uncaring world.    I know that more people that read this are the type of people that don’t care about being courteous to their neighbors or being respectful to each other.

I get that.   It’s sad.   But it’s more sad that some people; like the woman that wrote that pink letter are pushed over the line by probably far more than that poor Autistic child who probably had one too many vaccinations by some uncaring company, that was regulated by some uncaring politician, that was elected to office by some uncaring voter who liked the tie worn by the politician more than the other guy or gal running for office.

Isn’t our world such a total mess?
