Crazed Cat Lady Tries to Bully CFN into Coverage by Jamie Gilcig 082018

Cornwall Ontario – It’s odd, some of the requests we get for assistance.   As this newspaper is about to celebrate our tenth anniversary of somehow surviving in this culturally toxic town it never stops to astound me how entitled some people think they are?

Our first two years we essentially said yes to everyone no matter how small or trivial the request.

After the city hall led conspiratorial boycott and my false arrest during the 2014 election my attitude changed.

Essentially my mantra changed to give freebies to our clients or groups that give back somehow.

You don’t charge for coverage, but for a relationship to be successful there has to be give and take at some point.

For example I used to support Tri County Literacy who have a tiny budget.   At one point while driving over I heard an ad for them on Corus Radio (back when I’d listen to them) and asked their coordinator if they appreciated what CFN did for their organization?

She answered affirmatively so I asked her why even a tiny portion of their tiny budget wasn’t spent with us, especially as we were the only media outlet to show up at their event and had a larger audience than Corus, even at that time?

Later, when we had our program sponsored by some local business people Tri County actually refused one year of free ad and marketing support paid for by this program.   Boggling.  Truly.

So today when the crazy cat lady attacked I was a bit jaded and used to the abuse.  In Cornwall it seems that when say no to someone or out their truth they threaten or actually try to turn all their friends and family against you, many without hesitating to embellish or actually fabricate abuse to achieve their goal.

With over 1 million human pageviews monthly and our leading position regionally,  we really don’t pander to groups to give them coverage.   When you run or lead a charity or not for profit part of your job is to build relationships to gain editorial support and if you get that coverage it’s important to give back.   And even if you don’t like an editor, your goal should always be about a media outlets audience.

While many groups have tiny budgets, board members and supporters do buy ads or make viewer donations in their personal lives.  We have people that make donations and mark what they want to support when they do so.

This newspaper doesn’t charge for news coverage contrary to what this woman alleged.  She definitely failed in the how to win friends and influence people portion of running a group.

Telling a media outlet that another media outlet covered their story also is not inspirational.  Not everyone likes sloppy seconds,  and it reduces the value of the story to any outlet.

I won’t mention this person’s name,  or the name of her group because as many people know, there really is no such thing as bad publicity.

Instead of embracing the words I sent her suggesting that she and her group start to build a relationship with us she instead chose to passive aggressively threaten me with words like:

Just thought you wanted to talk about it. That’s not a problem. I’ll let our group know.

Again, certainly not words to build on.   It just goes to show you that just because you may mean well doesn’t justify that your actions will do well.  Ultimately if your goal really is to be achieved then you need the support of more people, not less.   Respect goes a long long way.  Nobody owes anyone a living.  Personally I feel sad for the cats that won’t get helped because this woman alianates people like myself.

This newspaper will always support positive achievement and goals to help build a better community, but people have to respect our very valuable audience and yes, sometimes you do have to give to get or certainly remember that two way relationships are always more valuable than parasitic ones.  While it’s not all about money like large chain media conglomerates there are many ways to support and help local media support local communities.

Seniors Situation Room by Dawn Ford Hotel Dieu 69 Yearbook AUG 21 18

Cornwall Ontario – The last Vitae Lampada, the yearbook of the Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Nursing, was in 1969, the year the school closed. Luckily I was able to borrow a copy and also a Graduation Exercises program from Terri Hooker, Class of ’69.

In the yearbook are a lot of photos of staff in the various departments, on the wards of the floors and individual photos of each member of the graduating class as well as group pictures. It was wonderful to read and to see so many happy smiling nurses.

There were many festivities to celebrate the graduation: a Mother and Daughter banquet, a banquet given by of the Auxiliary of HDH, a Parent banquet, a special Mass and breakfast and a formal dance held at the former St. Columban’s Church Hall, now the Agape Center.

The Graduation Exercises were held at the General Vanier Secondary School on June 11th. In the program are many familiar names.

Rev. Rudy Villeneuve was Chairman for the evening. The Valedictory was given by Mrs. Jeanne Macintosh, Class of 1969. Mr. Jerome Duplante led the class in singing The Class Song accompanied by Miss Lucie Cardinal, pianist. Greetings were given to the class by City of Cornwall Mayor Nick Kaneb, Mrs. Emile Fortin of the Woman’s Hospital Auxiliary and Dr. A. J. McLean of the Cornwall Academy of Medicine.

Sister Mary MacKenzie, R.H.S.J. led the class in The Jeanne Mance Pledge:

“That I may be strengthened in my resolve to model my life of duty after that of Jeanne Mance, the first lay-nurse of my beloved Canada. I place myself in the presence of God, and I pledge myself with the help of His Grace to be faithful to the following ideals:

I will be true to the practice of religion which is the inspiration of my noble vocation and while administering to the body will serve the soul by observing the principles of right Ethics and nursing honour.

I will be devoted to the profession that is mine, obeying the physicians within the sphere of his authority and I will make my work a labor of love rather than of profit whenever the service of God or country requires it of me.”

The presentation of pins was by Sister Mary Murphy, R.H.S.J. Administrator of the HDH. The address to the Graduating Class was given by Kevin B. Mooney, B.A., PhD. Chief of Psychological Services, Ottawa General Hospital and the presentation of awards was by Dr. W.B. Renner, President of the Medical Staff. Pipe Major was Robert Kitts accompanied by Piper William Cooper.

The Graduating Class of the Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Nursing 1969:

Back Row l-r: Lynne MacDonald, Sharon Emberg, Judith Bogar, Wendy Warden, Jean MacIntosh (deceased), Sheila Russell, Barbara Proux, Gail MacDonald, Andra Fortin, Teresa Cook, Lisette Boucher, and Mary Hebert

Row 3 : Theresa Szniger (deceased), Bonnie Painter, Lucie Laforge, Dorothy Ann Ferguson

Row 2: Linda Lemire, Mary Jane Macphee, Olive Bergeron, Anne Robertson, Shirley Lauzon, Peta Fraser, Sheila MacDougall, Mary Markell (deceased), Gloria McKinnon

Front Row: Francine Claude, Mary Gault (deceased), Barbara Mongor, Caroline Rines, Adele Copp-Rolofs, Anita Lauzon, Colleen Burson, Imelda Cleary, Lynn Lalonde, Therese Theriault, Louise Poirier, Maureen Malyon, Margaret Leduc.

Some of the interesting things in year books are the ads of the sponsors at the back of the books. Many of the businesses in this year book are no longer in business. Some of the ads were of the Cornwallis Hotel, Struthers Pharmacy, Marthe’s Corset Shoppe, Lavimodiere Furrriers, Albert’s Dry Goods, R. Fraser Jeweller, Wilson’s Wool and Gift Shop and The Advance Shop, to name a few.

A big thank you to Jean Martelle, President of the HDH School of Nursing Alumni and Terri Hooker for all their help and information. It is very much appreciated.

Limericks are always lots of fun.

Here is a great one by Carolyn Wells:

The Tutor

A Tutor who tooted the flute

Tried to teach two young tooters to toot.

Said the two to the Tutor,

“Is it harder to toot or

To tutor two tooters to toot?”

And one by Rudyard Kipling:

The Boy of Quebec:

There was a small boy of Quebec

Who was buried in snow to the neck;

When they said, “Are you friz?”

He replied, “Yes, I is-

But we don’t call this cold in Quebec.”

The recent newsletter of Child Haven International is once again full of pictures of happy children, staff and their activities. CHI was founded in 1985 by Dr. Nat Shah and Bonnie and Fred Cappuccino to help orphaned and destitute children and women in need of food, clothing, shelter, health care, education and moral and emotional support. There are ten projects in four countries: Tibet in China, Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Many other children not living in one of the homes are sponsored for education.

For more information on CHI go to: www.childhaven.ca or email Fred at fred@childhaven.ca or phone the Maxville office at 613-527-2829.

In this photo in the Kaliyampoondi home in Tamil Nadu, India, a staff member, Satish, is “surrounded by an admiring crew of young helpers and collaborators”. Satish is recycling some old paint cans to be used as water dippers for showers, a vegetable oil tin to be used as a trash can and is also repairing one of the boy’s trunks.

The newsletter always closes with the quote from Rabindranath Tagore:

“Let me light my lamp, says the star,

And never debate if it will dispel the dark.”

Here is a cute joke from a friend:

A Senior’s Version of FACEBOOK

For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog and me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them thumbs up and tell them I “like” them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have 4 people following me: 2 police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.

Have a good week, Dawn

Bernadette Clement Lies to the Public as She Runs for Mayor by Jamie Gilcig 082318

Cornwall Ontario –  Lawyers can be a smart bunch, cagey too.   It’s rare to get them “on the record” unless they want to be on the record which is why it’s so much fun to get them to chat off the record when the opportunity arises.

“Flipper is as good a politician as she is a lawyer.”

When your peers view you in that manner it makes for interesting chat.     Let’s take a moment and examine her record of the last two terms.

She’s been a leader on a council that has raised the levy almost 20% per term without adding value to the ratepayers.   Many call this TAXRAPE.  Most of the monies have gone into supporting runaway emergency service raises and covering up scandals.   Maureen Adams has refused to state how much BLG, Gowlings, and other power firms have made from Cornwall.   The latest disaster, the City suing MPAC could cost us over $250K alone in a year of record tax hikes and empty reserve funds!   Bernadette is a big part of that.

She was on the River Institute when the city was wiping out Beavers in Guindon Park.  She was silent on that issue.  After a group from BC paid their own cash to help the beavers and install devices word is that some were torn out and the are has been allowed to become overgrown and a disaster.

As a board member of Glen Stor Dun Lodge she presided through the Whistleblowing scandals.  She actually was involved as a councilor as well terrorizing one of the Whistleblowers.

She was a leader in destroying the city’s 36 year Cornwall Public Art Gallery, with many saying it was only because yours truly was on the board and had actually saved it.  We stretched six months monies into two years.  Clement actually told council that she couldn’t support giving the gallery the paltry Lift Off donation because of our governance.   She had failed to effect new governance for the gallery (she was supposed to be helping) and was fully aware that the board I was on had enacted and voted through a new conforming charter when she made that statement.

Flipper ironically now is leading the charge for the purchase of the BOM building to be turned into an Art Centre.  It was done in the shadows, with no real local community monies and will cost more to sit empty than the city spent yearly supporting the old art gallery.   And at least two law firms were screwed out of buying the BOM building as the safe there was perfect for lawyers.   In other words Ms Clement supported using tax dollars to screw two local businesses while supporting the Elaine MacDonald follies in an adventure that has already cost nearly 1 tax point in a year of record tax increases.

She’s now trying to embrace technology using facebook live chat.   It hasn’t been working well for her, but there’s a stink of hypocrisy when she talks about attracting jobs to Cornwall.   We’ll use this media company as an example.  Her artificially vanilla blarts on facebook were enough to make many snicker before turning her off.

She was more than happy to have our support before the Conspiratorial City Boycott which she embraced and has supported.  She was more than happy to be on our online radio station too.

So what you had was local investment creating local opportunity,  and helping the local economy get conspiratorially attacked by the council she sits on.

We ended up folding our radio station and cancelling plans for our online TV station which would’ve seen SIX full time emerging media jobs in this city in its first year.   Does that sound like someone that wants to support attracting jobs?

She didn’t support our 100 Letter campaign which was geared to promote Cornwall and local business.  Again, is that really about attracting growth for the community?

She has of course supported the CFN boycott.  While hurting this newspaper it’s devastated the local economy as businesses that want to advertise with us that have city hall connections are fearful.   The former Art Gallery president while I was there,  lost a contract when his client was told to dump him because his client had a contract with the city.    Another prominent business person who owns multiple local firms had to dump us as one had huge contracts with city hall.  These are only two of many examples sadly.

Ms Clement was party to all of this or certainly didn’t voice any complaint.

As a lawyer she’s sat on a council that has been bullet ridden with lost lawsuits and scandals.  While not repping the City surely her being at the bar would suffice her to simply say that certain actions wouldn’t pass a legal stink test?

As a lawyer that tries to win Human Rights Tribunal cases she sat silent during the 2014 Chamber Debates bizarre charter violating demands for the debate.  While others did to as a lawyer that supposedly has some understanding 0f our Charter you’d think she’d at least wave her arms around and say something…..

And oddly enough she has her hen parties at NAV Can.  NAV is a lovely facility that pays little to no taxes to the City because they have some Federal government connection.   Why push business to them when there are facilities in Cornwall that pull full freight?   Why actually have events leave local business for NAV?

And then you have the darkest secret that’s hovering in the room.   In 2018 what politician wouldn’t admit to being gay?  It’s not a crime in Ontario and Canada.  Former premier Wynne had no problems outing herself, and her latest historical election loss was not about her sexuality, but her utter abuse of the public.

It’s not about privacy either.  If someone is going to lie about that what else would they lie about?  Who are you really voting for?   Some apologists suggested it was because she was trying to protect her alleged long time girlfriend who could lose her gig because she works for a backwards hypocritical organization that has had multiple historic scandals but apparently has an issue with homosexuality.  Why a lesbian would want to work for them lord knows, but then again how many with her background have gone bankrupt for $35K or so?

I digress.   This sadly is the front runner in this election for mayor of Cornwall.  Is it any wonder that business is leaving, young people are leaving, and seniors?   After two failed kicks at a run to be MP surely the community would realize that this emperor wannabee surely isn’t wearing any clothes?   Getting lame duck mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy to run to vote split though was a great tactic that just might work, but at the end of the day it’s the people of Cornwall that lose because in this election there simply is no worthy choice for mayor.

You have a #metoo corporate hack.  You have a muddling former Real Estate guy who got into power on the backs of corruption that Flipper was a part of,  and the support of this newspapers viewers, and you have the political train wreck that is Bernadette Clement who Kathleen Wynne wouldn’t even touch, and then you have a Nicole Spahich who…..

If Bernadette Clement is the best you have for Mayor of Cornwall maybe Jules was right about this town….

What do you think dear CFN viewers? You can post your comments below.

Tweed CEO Bruce Linton Takes Media for a Tour – Before Shindig in Smiths Falls by Brad Milne 082418

Smiths Falls Ontario – Tweed’s new visitor centre in their global headquarters located in Smiths Falls will have its  opening  to the public on Thursday, Aug. 23,   just before Tweed’s 3rd annual  shindig .

The shindig is a concert event hosted by Tweed .  Local social media posts again this  year are speculating that Snoop Dogg will make an appearance .

CEO Bruce Linton did not confirm any line up information in his addressing remarks.   He did announce  chocolate being made in the factory footprint by  award winning  Hummingbird Chocolate in addition to the cannabis production.

As for sampling anything others Hummingbird’s Chocolate at this point it’s countdown to October and will have to be done online .

The visitor centre experience provides an unique  experience for those 19 years of age or older.

Product education and history displays, multimedia and some inactive,  the gift shop projects an image of a flag ship store like something located in Downtown Toronto  but throughout the entire tour there is an underlying theme of community, be it in the staff or in the rebirth of the building.

The iconic Hershey chocolate production viewing catwalk tour circuit has been preserved down to the original floor, although the hypnotic machinery of the chocolate production is gone.

The framed views are now more akin to a zen , ultra clean science fiction movie set .   For of those of us that could keep up with our tour leader Bruce Linton, we learned that more production windows are planned .

The spaces between the viewing production window houses a collection of sponsored artwork.  The year two artwork is not on display yet , but seems Smiths Falls has a new expanding art gallery in town as well .

In this lesser known give back Tweed program, Linton explains, where Red Bull might sponsor extreme sports, Tweed are sponsoring artists.

If like myself you remember taking the tour of the old factory as a kid, the soul of the place seems still there to relive for myself  and the power to spark imagination,  although on a different level.

Is Democracy Dead in Cornwall Ontario? By Jamie Gilcig 082818

$
0
0

Cornwall Ontario – Democracy dies when people don’t tend to it.  That means voting. It means being active more than just at elections. It means becoming aware to some degree of what the monkeys at City Hall get up to.   I mean we have a city clerk that can’t even get candidate contact information correct over one month since the gates opened.

In this town they get up to quite a bit.  We have had runaway tax increases which will only get worse.  We have a labour issue due to multiple terms of essentially letting the fox in the henhouse.

I can’t imagine many other municipalities having the Current/former President of the Labour Council as a City Councilor (while espousing that raising taxes is a good thing!) like we have in Elaine MacDonald.   The Labour block is a strong one in Cornwall, but not strong enough to rule the day if more people simply decided that they’d had enough of bad service and high taxes.

It’s all interconnected.  It goes to the Chamber who pooped all over the Charter during the last election and instead of coming up with a creative solution (I know we’re talking Lezlie Strasser and Mike Metcalfe) have decided to abandon debate for council candidates and have a schmoozer instead and just a mayor’s debate while for some odd reason kissing Cogeco’s posterior when there is more cord cutting than ever and Cogeco is not supposed to be competing with Commercial media.  That the chamber of all entities perpetuates that is so odd.  All media should be treated equally for such an event.

Many of us call it the clique, but it’s just one good ol boy or gal rubbin’ the others hind end and if you’re not on the inside then you’re on the out.    That’s fine for private business, but when it’s on the public’s dime quite another.

It’s even worse in the media where ol Hugo from the Freeholder appears to have given City Hall a free pass on an issue that most likely would make huge news in other cities.   If a Post Media paper won’t report news of that magnitude Democracy is not doing very well.  The scary part just might be the reasons why ol Hugo would duck such a story.

We have 31 individuals running for council.   There probably aren’t enough worthy to elect 10.  That’s scary.  Looking over nomination papers we see the same people signing sheets for the same people.  We have the kids of local big shots who couldn’t get gigs in the private world. We have kids of city managers.  We have people who have never held a real job in their lives other than those paid for by we the taxpayers and yet these monkeys want to run a near $200M per year corporation.

Do we even know why some of these folks are running and what they represent?  Or who?

Is it any wonder that Maureen Adams gets away with what she and other city managers do?  There simply is no backstop.  No device for the public to take action.  Which means higher taxes.  And more comments from developers that Cornwall

Wasn’t even in the game.

And this election sadly is in the bag.   The bad guys are going to win this one no matter what.  It’s also why you’re seeing so little coverage by media locally and so little chatter about this election.

As for the mayor’s slot it’s kind of ironic that David Murphy has been burned by ol Les who essentially has given the election to Flipper.   Of course whether Murphy or Clement won both are in the bag of the “clique” so expect more NAV CAN action and your tax dollars heading to that facility, as well as other strange and non-delightful uses of the public purse.   Maybe we’ll hire ten more full time firefighters?   Or build a second art centre to embrace Cornwall historical francophone culture?   After all.  It’s only your money.  Right?

It’s a dark and sad time that will only lead to more good people leaving Cornwall for greener less corrupt pastures.   This week I know of two families that have left which amount to a total of four adults and nearly ten children.   Can Cornwall really afford to see young families leave?  Can you blame them?

The only thing that will change this is YOU.   That’s right. If you’re reading this editorial then you probably have digested some of this.    But honestly YOU have to take action and work to make sure that during the next four years this scary group of monkeys are kept accountable and exposed each and every decision.

And you need to focus on making sure that in 2022 Cornwall becomes Brampton 2.0.

It’s all up to you.   It really is.

Ford Gov’t Focusing more on Math than Sex Ed in Ontario – by Jamie Gilcig 082918

$

Cornwall Ontario – The Ford government just issued a release outlining the failings of our educational system which seemed to focus more on Sex Ed than Math.   It seems that many would have our education system replace parenthood (although in far too many circumstances you can’t blame them) than simply teach our kids the importance of reading, comprehending, communicating, and counting.

The question is if this first step is a big step or something we need more investment in.  Under the Wynne and Liberal governments essentially public dollars were ransomed off for union support which led to dumber kids with less resources and runaway teacher salaries.  (just google compare salaries to Quebec and other regions of Canada)

In fact maybe it’s time for more Ontario teachers to focus on teaching our kids rather than politics and massive pension funds filled by the public purse?

The bees and the birds are important, but math is more important, especially for those special single mommies who seem to pump out babies as an occupation,  and then those poor offspring get worse educations generation after generation.

From the release:

Today, Education Minister, the Honourable Lisa Thompson, issued the following statement on the provincial EQAO results:

“The EQAO assessment results released today prove once again that we must do better with respect to students’ math performance in Ontario.

For the last five years, we have seen an overall decline in EQAO math scores. Half of Ontario’s Grade 6 students have failed to meet the provincial standard for math. And by the time our students get to Grade 9, more than half of them taking the applied math courses are failing to make the grade.

This is unacceptable. The previous government used our children’s classrooms to test a failed experimental curriculum called “Discovery Math”. As promised, our government has already made changes to bring back proven methods of teaching that work.

Yesterday, we released a new teacher’s guide and parent fact sheet that will help both teachers and parents focus student learning on traditional formulas and memorization techniques.

We’ve also announced that we are refocusing $55 million in existing math investments to district school boards. This funding will support math facilitators and leads at the school board and school levels, as well as provide release-time for our teachers to participate in training and learning focused on the fundamentals of math.

Although our government has already started to take the necessary steps to improve our children’s understanding of fundamental math, we look forward to hearing from parents and educators this September as we engage in unprecedented provincewide public consultations. These consultations will cover a variety of topics that will help inform changes to the mathematics curriculum. We look forward to sharing more detailed information on the consultation process in the coming weeks.

Our government believes that by getting back to the basics we’re ensuring our students are leaders in math education once again. We are committed to ensuring students have the skills they need to be successful in their future.”
