CFN Turns 8! What You Can Do to Help Us Serve You Better by Jamie Gilcig FEB 15, 2017

$

Cornwall Ontario – Eight is a mystical number.  It’s also a version of the infinity sign if you turn it sideways.

The Cornwall Free News turned eight this week, on the 9th.    I decided to not have any fanfare or major celebration as the last time I did so, our 5th anniversary, I was falsely arrested by the Cornwall Community Police Service on charges of making threatening phone calls which records show I clearly never made.  (threatening or otherwise.)

CFN is at a crossroads.  It’s the 6th year of a conspiratorial boycott led by City Hall which is kinda insane.   This newspaper is for sale, but media isn’t the best business to be in the year 2017.

We pull in over 1 million human pageviews per month and still growing.   From a little berg like Cornwall that’s six flavours of amazing.     Does anyone really think it helps Cornwall for this boycott to be public?  What message does that send to the sixty or so percent of our audience that’s from outside of Cornwall?

Don’t move here.  Don’t even think of starting a real business.   Corruption has led to brutally high taxes that are going up at an even faster rate as local industry closes.  That you can negotiate huge breaks on your MPAC evaluations due to dropping property values?   That we cite seniors for playing Abba?  Kill kids ice rinks and stop them from selling worms?    And that we try to kill local business if it’s not built by non local people?   Those are not messages that lead to growth and they all sit at the feet of those at council and certain managers that seem to essentially be paid to hurt the community.  It’s boggling at the very least….

Journalism is a dying trade as people, while still clamoring for real news, don’t seem to want to pay for it?  It’s a challenge that all media outlets face.

The biggest problem facing journalism is that big corps have been allowed to gobble up most of we Independents which makes it easier for their fellow corporations and government to lean on them, essentially censure what they write about.

When I defended our area twice successfully against Wal Mart for example it all but insured that we’d never get an ad from the money machine that it is even though it wastes metric tons of cash on print ads in other area media that can’t come close to our viewership.

In fact in Cornwall the newspaper with the most actual ads has about the lowest readership.   It’s essentially non content, and because they charge less than the Seaway News does for its ads many of their long time advertisers have bailed on them.    Which is insane as the only real reason any entity should advertise is to gain visibility to large pools of viewers, especially if those viewers are their key demographics.  This newspaper that very few read actually has more pages per edition now than the Seaway News, mostly in ads.   That’s insane.  (And good for Mike Piette who is probably the best media sales rep in the area which also calls into question the business savvy of most of his clients)

And then when their businesses struggle or fail they blame things like advertising.

CFN for example not only charges less and offers more value, but has products our local competition simply do not offer.   We also are more result centric.   Many business people don’t understand how important it is not only to advertise and market, but to make sure that they are doing so properly.  It’s not enough to just show your logo and hope.

All that being said the challenge facing CFN and all media is how to generate enough income to keep the lights on.

As one of our city councilors likes to joke about, I tend to do just about everything to keep CFN running.  I’d love to have more help and staff; but without more revenue that can’t happen, especially as long as the boycott by the City continues.  (can you imagine a city trying to kill not only a locally grown business, but other local businesses that simply want to advertise where they please?  We had one local business pull their ad after sharing that we sent them three times as much traffic as all the other media combined because they had another business with city contracts that were threatened)

The good news is that a recent court decision exposed a first conviction of conspiracy against the interests of this newspaper.  More to come soon hopefully….

We have already added digital ads which I never wanted to do.     We have a new subscription/donation button (click below) because nothing of value in this world is truly free.   If we had $1 per month from every viewer of CFN we’d be able to add 4-6 good emerging media jobs in this community which means we’d be able to deliver more of the content that our viewers love to click on.  I’ve actually had to turn down several stories this year because of the time and resources it would take to cover them.

Our last option is a limited paywall.   That would mean you the viewer would have to pay to click on certain stories.

We all deserve to be compensated when we do good work.   We have some terrific contributors to CFN and have this amazing policy where our writers get 50% of any sponsorship of their columns.   It’s a terrific value for sponsors as well as their ads in column essentially are ever green.

So if you’re still reading this please ponder the value of CFN to you.  It might be a lot; it might be less, but it certainly is of value.

What can you do to help?

Keep reading.   Please share our content on social media and with your friends and family.

Please comment on our stories on CFN and on our social media channels too!  Your voice counts.   How many media outlets have a Mission Statement like ours?  Oddly enough, even though our statement has been live since 2009 a city lawyer has tried to justify the boycott by suggesting that CFN is a blog instead of an Online Newspaper which as idiotic a statement as that is, has been accepted by many of our elected officials.

Mission Statement

CFN is an online newspaper whose Mission is to give voice to the many who’d never have an opportunity to have a voice whether via op-ed, letters, or comments on stories.

To be non-partisan and allow voices to be heard even though our ownership, editors, staff, sponsors, and viewers may not always agree with them.

For people to have voice, but still do so in a safe manner although they may be challenged strongly for those opinions.

And that by creating a forum to share unfiltered news and opinions that we may as a society speak to each other and exchange ideas that can lead to growth of our culture, community and society in a positive manner and show people that they do count; their voices do count, and that anyone can change their world.

Please support our sponsors because without sponsors we’d either have to shut or offer a much less limited service.

Please tell other businesses you support, especially car dealers like Troy Hickman and Real Estate professionals that you support CFN.   (Troy apparently lost a retired client who buys a new car every year because he boycotts CFN)

Please hit that donation button and make like it’s Christmas.   CFN needs to refill it’s cups with doubloons.  We know some of you can afford a good donation to help keep us rolling.

Special thanks to the many of you who have been with us since 2009.

Here’s hoping to a magical 2017!

And we’re still running our special offer of a banner in our rotation for only $249 for the entire year! (300×250 or 468×90 pixels)   Dial 855 444 1133 to book yours today.

Together people can make great things come true!

Michel Therrien’s Valentine’s Day Massacre – Claude Julien is Back as Habs Coach by Jamie Gilcig FEB 15, 2017

$

Cornwall Ontario –  Getting fired as a coach in professional sports is part of the job.  This season five coaches have fallen; many with over five years of tenure.

Michel Therrien’s days were numbered after rumbles of a quote condemning first year captain Max Pacioretty over the Summer.

The moment in this video below spelled the end of the coach.  He simply was walking dead until the current by week.

If GM Marc Bergevin had allowed Therrien to continue after this break the full blame of this season would be on his shoulders.   Of course any experienced hockey owner or analyst would already be at that conclusion.

Trading PK Subban was clearly a management fail; especially as the return was not equal to the value and that’s no snub of Shea Weber who’s done his best since the trade and has some strong numbers so far this first season.

But in the cap age asset management is not something you can just fix with money.  Even buyouts impact your cap. This season for example the team is without a million dollar forward or fill in as we pay for PA Parenteau’s buyout. Oddly enough the team could use his scoring presence right now.

The team sent clear messages to its GM and ownership during this season.  They started strong showing they clearly could play strong hockey.    The bailed on Therrien’s birthday.  They limped out against one of the worst teams in hockey, and then they were shut out by their arch rivals, the big bad Bruins.

The meeting between Pacioretty, Weber, and Price with their GM that was leaked to the media was another nail in Therrien’s coffin, but to be fired and replaced by Claude Julien for a second time in his career must have even PK Subban smiling this morning.

The irony is that Julien was fired in Boston ultimately because of the hand dealt to him by his GM; similar to Therrien’s position.    In this writer’s opinion I don’t think that the cabal of Price, Weber, and Pacioretty wanted Bergy to bring in top talent and win a cup with Therrien because then they’d never be rid of him, and this was essentially a group of players simply not wanting, for whatever reason, to buy into their coach.  Sydney Crosby had the same effect on his team a few times too.    In fact he did it once to….Michel Therrien.     It’s not like players tank, but great players need to hit a certain emotional place to get the results that put them in the class they are.

Go back and watch that video.   The day Therrien lost his goalie, was the day he lost his team.   And he probably lost Price long before that video clip was shot.

Switching gears this writer is getting tired of the cop out about our team’s situation at Centre.

Yes the Habs are not strong up the middle.  Yes it’s a challenge to fix, but the team is still first in its conference with the Centre’s they have.

Every team in the division that’s currently in a playoff spot (including wildcard) is stronger than the Habs.  That’s the reality, but then every team isn’t as strong in net or on D.    It takes a team to win; not just one player.

Every team that has fired their coach this season has seen a bump up.  Some many not last, but clearly the star players were fired up after their coaches were dumped.

Expect a big bump in Montreal which will push the team back up and over the mountain.  Expect at least one trade before the bye week is up, and probably at least one more before the trade deadline.

Expect Alex Galchenyuk to return to his centre spot and have a strong finish to the season barring injury.

The pressure now is more on Weber, Price, and Pacioretty than Bergevin.    Bergy can tell his guys “look, I fired my best bud for you guys, so now you have to deliver.”   And they do as Pacioretty and Price are up for new contracts after next season.

And if they don’t deliver this year.  If they don’t “LEAD” the team to a strong playoff performance then a smart GM would have to ask if the time to trade them is before their next contracts.

Because in the cap age it always comes down to asset management.

Fearless predictions:

Montreal will make it through at least two rounds of the playoffs.

Tomas Plekanec will have a very strong finish to the season.

Carey Price will rebound.

David Desharnais will not finish the season with the team.

Bergy will surprise most of the pundits in whom he acquires.

Shea Weber’s minutes the rest of the way will be reduced so that he can be strong for the playoffs which he has never excelled at in Nashville.

Cornwall Legion 1st VP Arthur Murray Exposed Faking Military Record FEB 19, 2017

$

Cornwall Ontario – An American website has covered a story about the Cornwall Legion’s 1st VP and cadet liaison Arthur Murray not having served or earned any actual medals which is a criminal offence.

The Legion nor Mr. Murray have responded to CFN’s request for comment prior to publication of this story.

Frank Gervais of Ottawa pled guilty, and was sentenced to 50 hours of community service for impersonating a soldier at a Remembrance Day event with the Legion leading the charge.

If Gervais was nailed for 50 hours for just attending Remembrance Day what would the sentence be for participating in the capacity that Mr. Murray is alleged?

No record can be found that would confirm his claims although, Murray did have a number of images of 2 RCHA in action on his FB page, and he claimed to be the subject of those pictures…. The images have since been scrubbed from the page however, many of them are still available in the image gallery of the the Royal Canadian Legion Branch (www.cornwall-legion.ca) where he serves as the 1st Vice President/Army Cadet Liaison Officer. Interestingly, Murray holds identical Legion branch appointments to recently exposed and self-admitted poser Curtis “Jack” Roush of Smithville, Ontario. (http://www.niagarathisweek.com/news-story/7018926-smithville-legion-vp-remorseful/)

Under the Canadian Criminal Code, section 419, it is illegal to use military uniforms or certificates.

The story states that Mr. Murray has apologized and surrendered the medals he wore.

The question is why hasn’t he been charged and why has he not either resigned or removed from the Legion in Cornwall who still list him as a 1St Vice President?

Between this incident, if proven to be true in a court of law, and the embarrassment  of the Glen’s Honourary Lt. Colonel and former Liberal MPP Jim Brownell’s support of a person that desecrated the Poppy, which was condemned by the Legion Poppy director in Ottawa, with Brownell stating  “I’m not my brother’s keeper” which is what the Military actually are, and participating in an internet hate group while using a profile picture of him in uniform.

Of course Mr. Murray not really being military could explain why he never responded about the Brownell situation when contacted years ago for the original story?

Petition To Boot PUNCH A ZIONIST McGill Student Igor Sadikov Spreading by Jamie Gilcig FEB 19, 2017

$

0

CORNWALL ONTARIO – One would think that after the shooting at a mosque in Quebec City that left six dead that Quebec and Canada would be hyper sensitive to threats of violence based on race.

Yet after McGill Student Society Board Member Igor Sadikov still has not been charged and has still not be turfed from the University after he tweeted that it was “Punch a Zionist day”

The SSMU voted to reject a motion calling for Sadikov to resign.   Police have not charged him even though charges were laid on the 10th and today  is the 19th of February.

In a National Post story he was quoted as:

On Friday, he wrote on Facebook that he had recently been reminded of tweets he wrote between 2009 and 2012, before he entered university. They contained “violent slurs and discriminatory remarks targeting racialized people, women, queer people, people with disabilities, and people with mental illness,” he wrote. He said he no longer holds those biases and regrets having written the tweets, which have now been deleted along with the rest of his Twitter account.

The SSMU has since backtracked and issued a statement to students:

We want to reassure the community of the SSMU’s position condemning physical violence and our commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all students irrespective of race, religion, cultural or political background.

Every Director, Councillor, Officer, and member of any committee of the Board of Directors or Legislative Council of the Society must uphold the Standard of Care for all members of the community as outlined in our Constitution. It is the decision of the Executive Committee that Councilor Sadikov’s recent actions did not uphold this responsibility. More specifically, we believe that Councillor Sadikov’s actions were an incitement of violence and, for that reason alone, we have recommended that he resign from his position as a Director and as an Arts Representative to the Legislative Council.

The Executive would also like to recognize that more should have been done to moderate the conversation that took place at the SSMU Legislative Council meeting on February 9th, 2017, and would like to reiterate our apology to members of the community who felt unsafe both during and following that discussion. We are working towards ensuring this will not happen again.

There should be no room in a just society for the type of behavior exhibited by Mr. Sadikov or the SSMU who in this writer’s opinion, whose board who were present at that meeting and subsequently voted to not sanction Mr. Sadikov, should immediately resign and get some education on racism, and how it leads to violence.

That the person at that February 9th meeting essentially was attacked for calling Mr. Sadikov on his statement shows that racism is alive in Canada contrary to what some feel and that it’s alive in our universities which is frightening.

There is not a petition that asks for a clear action which this writer supports.

McGill University: Please Expel Student Leader Igor Sadikov for Encouraging Violence, immediately!

Canada is an amazing country.  It’s not perfect, but it’s better than many.  In 2017 there should be zero tolerance for the calling out for any racial violence against any group.

Would You Like to Be Cornwall Ontario’s 11th Councilor? FEB 20, 2017

$

CORNWALL ONTARIO – As many regular CFN viewers know, CFN and its viewers played a strong role in dumping corrupt former Mayor Bob Kilger and half of his council last election.

While the progress in that exercise was getting people to think about issues and take action for change, clearly the mission hasn’t been accomplished.  People have to learn that an election should never be a popularity contest and that it really is important to know the issues and educate yourself to get what you want done in a community.

CFN will be supporting candidates that want to truly and honestly cut taxes and waste in this city, but more importantly effect change at city hall by removing the dead wood that has led to the higher taxes.  Too many of those on this current council are simply using the position to line their own pockets or step up the cronyism ladder.

It’s time to not elect people based on who their dad is; or see partisan politics enter municipal politics.

In the meanwhile as the election drums start to beat towards 2018 we are going to invite our viewers to submit articles and be Cornwall’s 11th Councilor.

If you have an issue that’s important and want to have your say email info@cornwallfreenews.com

If you have solutions to make Cornwall a more inclusive and progressive community our soap box is your soap box.

If you want to see more of our younger people find jobs and build  lives in Cornwall instead of seeing City Councilors try and find rides for our citizens to work in Ottawa like Justin Towndale did this weekend send in  your solutions.

If you want to hold our local agencies accountable as they spend OUR money send in your letters.

If you don’t want seniors to be cited for playing Abba at 7PM send in your letters.

It takes a village to make a community.   It’s time to be more active.

Now is your chance!

Cornwall Legion Confirms Arthur Murray Resignation by Jamie Gilcig FEB 21, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – CFN has confirmed that the Cornwall Legion’s 1st VP, Arthur Murray, has resigned.    They will be resolving the position at their next meeting on March 8th.

President Linda Fisher stated that the Legion only learned of Mr. Murray’s situation after the story broke in the media. She also stated that he had served in the reserves, but that has not been confirmed.

Mr. Murray has not responded to CFN via email.

Ms Fisher also confirmed that the Legion has not filed a section 419 criminal complaint against Mr. Murray and seemed bewildered as to who would.

READ OUR ORIGINAL STORY.

Mr. Murray allegedly was never an active service soldier and wore medals that he allegedly never earned.

It is against the law in Canada to wear the uniform or impersonate a soldier.  Franck Gervais of Ottawa was given community service for attending Remembrance Day activities in Ottawa in uniform as opposed to Mr. Murray who participated in uniform at local events.

The CCPS would not confirm if a charge had been laid yet.   We will update this story as more information becomes available.

Cornwall to Spend $10K+ to Fight Seniors Abba Noise Citation As Taxes Rise FEB 21, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – Is it any wonder why taxes are out of CONTROL in Cornwall Ontario as the City is set to face off in court against the Raymond’s over their disputing a noise citation for listening to bands like Abba and April Wine while playing cards.

As per our earlier stories.   LINK

The Raymond’s enjoy a card game in their backyard where they listen to their Bose sound system and enjoy their selection of 70’s music in the early hours of the evening.

Days later a Cornwall by law officer gave them a $130 ticket for excessive noise.  They enlisted Cornwall lawyer Andre Bourgon to assist them and fight off the utterly ridiculous citation.

The city uses the Ottawa law firm of BLG as apparently none of the 20 or so local lawyers can meet their standards or simply don’t charge enough…  it’s bewildering.

The estimated costs just to get to the trial which starts next week is nearly $10K.  With rates of approximately $400 per hour it adds up fast, especially when you have to factor in travel time back and forth from Ottawa.

Ironically there is no proof of the excessive noise as the by law officer did not even witness the alleged offense.

With City Hall beaming and whittling down the proposed tax increase to ONLY 2.79% and having to just give up hundreds of thousands of dollars back in Industrial MPAC adjustments is this not the definition of insanity, especially with about half of council having taken a pledge to cut taxes during the last election?

Add in the cost of the actual trial and the costs could skyrocket compared to simply waiving the ridiculous citation of $130.

And when most likely the city loses this case they could have to pay damages and costs to the Raymond family for their own legal representation as per their rights.

What do you think dear CFN viewers?  Is it time to make changes at our By Law office, and bounce not only Larson Payette, but his boss Chris Rogers??   Is it time to bounce this council in the next election; especially those that lied about cutting taxes?

Do we really need ten councilors to “lead” our community in this manner or is it time to have wards so that the Raymond’s alderman could or could not have served their interests rather than having ten councilors and a mayor whistle while their Ottawa law firm k chings their way to the bank?

INVESTIGATION QUASHES HUGE DRUG AND GUN DISTRIBUTION RINGS

18 People Charged; Fentanyl and Weapons Seized

(VAUGHAN, ON) – Several Ontario and Quebec residents face numerous charges following a multi-jurisdiction investigation into illegal firearms and the trafficking of illegal drugs in Ontario, Québec and the United States.

Project SILKSTONE began as a high-level Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) investigation targeting multiple criminal groups involved in trafficking illegal drugs and guns along the Highway 401 corridor between the Greater Toronto Area, through the Belleville/Bay of Quinte Region and Montréal, Québec. The investigation also revealed drug trafficking activities to and from the United States.

At a news conference today, OPP Deputy Commissioner Rick BARNUM and representatives from the project’s partner agencies unveiled details of the investigation and samples of the evidence seized during the 18-month probe. Project SILKSTONE was conducted by OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Sûreté du Québec, Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The investigation was also supported by The Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC). Members of the OPP Emergency Response Team, OPP OCEB, Peel Regional Police Tactical and Rescue Unit, and the Toronto Police Service Emergency Task Force (ETF) assisted with executing the search warrants. Several search warrants were executed earlier this week at locations across southeastern Ontario, the Greater Toronto Area and Montréal, Québec.

During the course of the investigation, the project team combined to seize 11,500 pills containing fentanyl, eight (8) kilograms of cocaine, 7.5 kilograms of MDMA (ecstasy), 260 grams of methamphetamine, 7,200 marihuana plants from an indoor grow operation, 180 pounds of processed marihuana bud, cases of vapes containing THC – known as ‘JuJu Joints’, drug paraphernalia and equipment. Project SILKSTONE investigators seized 23 firearms including three (3) pistols and 20 long guns, $69,000.00 in Canadian currency and $500.00 in U-S currency, $50,000.00 worth of casino chips, equipment and supplies from an illegal identity card-making operation, Radio Frequency (RF) detecting devices, and ‘colours’ from an outlaw motorcycle gang. In addition, four (4) vehicles, an enclosed trailer and a snowmobile were seized as offence-related property.

OPP have charged 18 people with 81 offences including charges relating to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA) and the Criminal Code of Canada. (See PROJECT SILKSTONE — ADDENDUM OF CHARGED PERSONS on the Media Resources Page)

“By dismantling a criminal operation of this magnitude, we’ve literally prevented more than 11-thousand ‘doses of death’ of fentanyl and illegal guns from killing people in our communities. Project SILKSTONE again demonstrates how effective law enforcement is at working together to target criminality. Police leaders continue to send a very clear message to criminals that – regardless of jurisdiction – police will continue to identify and aggressively pursue those individuals who threaten public safety.”

Ottawa Ontario – Jodie Emery, the CEO of Cannabis Culture, was in Ottawa yesterday, Feb. 22. She took to the steps of Parliament Hill to protest the arrest of marijuana users.
Her message to Justin Trudeau was to, “Stop the arrests.”  Jodie Emery said, “There have been more raids and arrests under Trudeau than under Harper.”
Jodie and the merry rally marched along Bank Street into Ottawa’s newest hugest marijuana dispensary, Cannabis Culture at 319 Bank Street where marijuana is sold without a prescription to adults over 19.
Ironically, while the Ottawa Cannabis store was opening, the Brantford Cannabis Culture store was being raided.

Roy Berger lives in Ottawa, Canada and has recently published, Thrills and Chills: Demagoguery, Charisma and Freedom with Max Weber, Émile Durkheim and J.J. Rousseau in both French and English editions.

St. Jo’s & L’Heritage Head Drop in Fraser Sec School Rankings in Cornwall FEB 23, 2017

Cornwall Ontario – I was always taught that if you’re going to do something, do it right.  If the goal of Cornwall educators has been to fail they clearly are living up to it during the past school season when all six secondary schools in the Fraser Institute’s yearly rankings fell back from their five year snapshots.

Holy Trinity fared best only dropping 7 spots from 180th out of 623 schools to 187 out of 740 that were ranked.

St. Joseph’s fell from 167 to 334.

La Citadelle from 260 to 224

L’Heritage from 153 to 358

St. Lawrence from 524 to 624

and CCVS from 571 to 624.

RO in Ingleside dropped from 524 to 689.

TAGWI actually showed a slight improvement to 447 from 454!

CDSB of Eastern Ontario schools fell hard under new pooh bah Todd Lalonde.

As schools fight for their lives surely their performances should play a role in making decisions about their futures.

Clearly the incredible amount of money being spent on our teachers are not returning value for investment in this region or maybe there really is something in the water?

Have Cornwall Community Police Solved All Crime – Is it Time to Amalgamate by Jamie Gilcig – FEB 28, 2017

$
0
0

CORNWALL ONTARIO – As I write this the CCPS have not reported any crime since February 23.  That’s five days.   It’s a bit bewildering considering their budget?

The United Counties of SD&G with about 50% more population, and far larger area to cover including CCPS Chief Dan Parkinson’s home outside of the City, had a budget of approximately $11M in 2016.

The Cornwall Community Police Service budget was approximately $17M.   A breakdown of total calls reported by the force divided by total budget is over…..$5,000.00.

The savings alone from having one police service for the region would pave some of the brutal roads we see and infrastructure needs.

Clearly this one issue is enough to finally start the conversation about how to initiate amalgamation in this Eastern tip of Eastern Ontario.

It doesn’t make sense to have so many ineffective municipal politicians mucking about thinking they are very special while really not representing the best interests of all the residents in their community.

Two quick examples are South Stormont where Deputy Mayor Tammy Hart, who was just convicted of Conspiracy along with fellow one time hate group members Bob Noble and Richard & Ruth Currier in court.   That conspiracy was connected to their attempt to shut down this newspaper and to kill the South Stormont News by going after our legal rep.     The Currier’s have now lost and spent an estimated $30,000.00.

The irony is one of the tactics used by these gifted souls during the last municipal elections was that if South Stormont didn’t kill its contract with SSN that taxes would go up by 10%.

While taxes have gone up since the last election it certainly had nothing to do with SSN other than the township spending nearly $20K to essentially default on an agreed contract for one year to publish the township bulletin.

Hart and friends are alleged to have terrorized some local business people that advertised in SSN as well as some Township staff.

Taxes have ballooned while transparency has gone down in South Stormont.    Is that really how to run a government?

Here in Cornwall things are even more bizarre.   Regular readers of CFN are familiar with many of the issues that CFN and myself have endured at the hands of some of our elected officials and city management; some of whom this writer really wouldn’t trust with plastic cutlery, never mind the budget, and government of this city.

Petty childish antics for example have kept me off any city committees.  It’s tradition that if you run for office and lose that if you apply to be on a city committee that you are given a seat as a courtesy for the time and effort spent in attempting to serve the community.

People like David Murphy clearly have no business being in politics.  As Chair of the Lay Committee, which is an ironic term for him to be on with the allegations related to him and some of his former students at St. Lawrence College, have refused to give me a position on any committee even though I applied to be on six and have since stated each time I get an email asking if I was still interested in being on a committee as positions open up.

Rising taxes, young people fleeing, corruption, cronyism….. can you imagine the savings to tax payer if we just had one pool of these folks for the region that makes up the United Counties of SD&G and Cornwall?

Doesn’t it make sense to limit the ignorance and pettiness to a smaller circle?

City and Township management are not much better, but are duplicated multiple times.  Again, amalgamation would reduce duplication of lack of services here in our part of Eastern Ontario.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

With so many of the decision makers in Cornwall hiding out in the townships to avoid the taxes they inflict on we residents doesn’t it feel grossly hypocritical?    These folks save thousands every year while benefitting from Cornwall services.  Is that not a definition of insanity for those that keep electing these monkeys?

What do you think dear CFN viewers?  Is it time to amalgamate the United Counties of SD&G and Cornwall?

Cornwall man found guilty of nine counts of animal cruelty

Cornwall, ON (February 28, 2017) – A 24-year-old Cornwall man has been found guilty of nine counts of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA Act as a result of an investigation into two dogs confined to a shed.

On October 29, 2016, the Ontario SPCA received a call about two dogs locked in an 8’ x 8’ garden shed on a property in Cornwall. An Ontario SPCA officer visited the property and, after unsuccessful attempts to locate the owner of the dogs, removed a Pug and Boxer-type dog living in unacceptable conditions without food or water. The shed was cluttered with junk and debris, with feces and urine covering the floor. With no windows, the dogs were kept in total darkness. They had no place to rest or lie down and had no fresh air due to the structure’s inadequate ventilation.

Brad Stephenson, 24, was found guilty on February 22, 2017 in a Cornwall Provincial Offences Court of nine counts of animal cruelty:

  • Once count of causing distress to an animal
  • One count of permitting an animal to be in distress
  • Seven counts of failing to comply with prescribed standards of care

Stephenson, who was not present during sentencing, received a 10-year prohibition from owning or caring for any animal, and was fined $900.

Both dogs have since been rehomed.

“There are no excuses for failing to care for your animals,” says Steve Toy, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. “If you find yourself in a situation where you can no longer care for your animals, please contact your local animal centre or humane society to discuss your options.”
